OK, I admit it, I only set that subject to get your attention.

An affectionate little grumble from across the pond ... I am so missing those long-winded, multi -post, several-paged, interesting debates about a Bernadette stage/film role, or a Bernadette rendition of any particular song from any particular recording or concert appearance. Such an eclectic mix of posters, with so many different views, made for such a fascinating experience.

So, tell me, where are you all hanging out?

At the moment I have my head down in a Beethoven string quartet, but that subject line sure got my attention. "Tulips" is probably the hardest movie I ever voluntarily watched all the way through. I got my copy, a used rental, for $2 from a video shoppe going-out-of-business sale.
I'll admit that for a few minutes, I actually thought the movie was going to be pretty good. Bernadette cast as a sassy talking working class gal struggling with chronic depression seemed, for a few moments at least, like genius. Then the rest of the movie happened. End of story.
At least I was kind of amused that her character had my real life surname.

One should never type the title of this thread - even as a joke!

Okay, I will begin a discussion. Something I have been thinking about since Monday night. But I must state now. SPOILER ALERT: Do not read further if you don't want to know or don't already know the end of Love Letters.

Okay, so did Andy drive Melissa to suicide? She was obviously suicidal and thinking about killing herself but the fact that he insisted on coming to see her when she said she didn't want to see him, did his impending trip push her over the edge. I think she would have done it eventually any way, but if he hadn't insisted on coming, would she maybe have not done it at that moment.

Or do you think he actually did come to see her and maybe she killed herself after his visit? His last letter doesn't really comment on whether he saw her or not. Though I would guess she went through with her threat that she would be gone when/if he came.

Do you think Andy blames himself for her death? The ending of their affair seems to be what pushes her to think her life is no longer worth living.

So those are the questions. Discuss!

Scottie, I thought you had gone quite mad. I did a spit-take of diet coke!

Moljul, you think too much. But, I think the answer is "no" to all your questions.

LOL. Well work has been busy but boring all at the same time so I had to think of SOMETHING! And why not spend it psychoanalyzing the actions of a character in a play I just saw?

Moljul, it's been years since I've seen a production of Love Letters (saw a local production), and I really should reread it before answering. Your questions are thought provoking. However, I am very leery of saying that someone drove another person to do the same thing Melissa did.

I'm reading and reviewing children's books for a professional journal and serving on a children's literature awards committee, so I've had to scale back my time on the computer (reading critically is not the same as reading for pleasure, which isn't always fun!). However, I do keep up with the board.

That new recording should be out eventually, right? That will spark conversation, I'm sure.

leebee, "Tulips" is probably the shrillest movie I've ever watched all the way through. It seems like the sound recordist had his or her hand glued to the treble button.

moljul, I do the same thing when I go to see a particularly interesting play or film, I wonder what the characters did before or after the sequence of events I've just seen depicted on stage/screen. I do the same thing in Art Galleries when I view wonderful paintings ... and wasn't that the inspiration behind Sunday In The Park With George?

Sister Rose, thank heavens it wasn't champagne you were drinking, that would have been such a waste ...

Does anyone know if that "new recording" has been recorded?

There are people here who will testify that I have unfortunately wasted champagne in the past. It was a sad occasion, indeed. However, I recovered enough to capture this.

Jenn,

You make a very good point about not wanting to state someone caused another person's suicide. I guess I meant more his visit drove her to it. Or rather her shame over what she had become drove her to end her life before Andy could see her.

In their younger days she didn't like the letter writing and wanted so much to see him in person yet in the end it was their relationship through letters that was more comfortable to her so she didn't have to deal with Andy seeing the person she had become. I wonder if Andy had not pushed for the in person visit if she would have put off the suicide. And like I said, it is possible, the suicide took place after the visit, not before - though her last letter implies she would do it before.

SisterRose, loved seeing the video again. Atlantic City, right? I do really need to figure out how to post these types of things to Youtube.

Sister Rose, methinks it's just as well you wasted the champers that night - otherwlse your hand may not have been quite as steady when capturing those super moments....

Great video, I love her little dance steps in that song. I'll practise them while I'm doing the housework this morning.
