From: Edinburgh, Scotland | posted: 9/1/2007 at 7:22:53 PM ET Finally, at last, got a chance to see "Fall From Grace" ... such a weird thing to realise that this was actually a true story about real people? I believe the character Bernadette played died only recently?
I'm sorry, I just can't take this sort of tv based religion stuff seriously. It is very foreign to all that goes on here "over the pond". So, maybe that is why I can't really comment on this film except to say it was good seeing Bernadette play a part that seemed so different from previous roles, and great to see her act opposite such a good actor as Mr Spacey.
I so wish that someone, somewhere, someday, will give this woman a great acting role. She really deserves it!

Well, I'm afraid I was silly (and curious) enough to have paid quite a few quid (£45, which equates to around $90) on ebay to buy a ropey old used video of this obscure little tv film about two obscure little tv evangelists.
Her performance? I'm not qualified to say since I find the whole movie rather ridiculous and a complete waste of her talents.
However, I will say that her airplane scene , where she freaks out and tries to open the plane door, will definitely become one of my all time favourite Bernadette moments. But maybe not for the right reasons.

I'd like to think that the movie's being ridiculous makes her performance stand out all the more, though. I am curious what you could mean about that airplane...

I've actually seen the compound that the Bakers built near Charlotte, which they used to call Heritage USA or something. When I was a youngster, they used to open the place up every Christmas and car loads of people from miles around used to go to see the (unintentionally) hilarious and ostentatious display of electrified holiday decorations. Even after the Bakers were exposed as frauds, people continued to send them money and the Christmas event kept on for a few years. Nearly everyone in downtown Charlotte had a story about a personal encounter with Tammy Faye, talking and moving at warp speed and spending away what was left of her ill-gained fortune.
I recall first seeing the Bakers on a small local TV network doing an afternoon children's show, puppets and classic old cartoons. At some point they became deathly serious all of the time, telling us to be afraid of the devil and foreigners and scientists and basically anyone that wasn't them, they promised to pray for you and build "missions" in obscure parts of the world and then promptly displayed an address and phone number to send your money to. They seemed to need loads of money all of the time. I was very young but it all looked completely ridiculous to me.
I love the tv movie, though. That must have been the first time I ever saw Spacey in something, because even today I always think of him as the actor who did Jim Baker!

I have to say, Ma and Pa Baker sound even weirder now, it seems like maybe they both were off their heads on drugs ... or perhaps just the effect of the fumes from all that hair spray they both must have inhaled each day?
Clearly, their warnings about "the devil" didn't get through to you ... judging by that Avatar you have there!

Sorry to quote myself, but just found myself indulging in a spot of 'wishful thinking' about Kevin Spacey and how he now lives in London and is Artistic Director of our historic Old Vic theatre, the old vic ...... the current production "All About My Mother" stars Dame Diana Rigg and has several other great roles for female actors.
