From Internet Network: 70.243.210.x | posted: 8/7/2007 at 11:01:41 PM ET Yeah I totally agree. I've been really bored lately so I've been reading over all the past interviews that have been posted. Which one/ones are your favorites?
I'd have to say my own personal favorite was (I can't remember which magazine it was from...maybe vogue) but it's the one were she makes the comment about her grandmother. I really liked that one, it was very revealing of who she is as a person. It broke my heart though to hear what her grandmother said, but really I think it's only made me like Bernadette more.

I was watching "The Fashionistas Diaries" this morning- The View wasn't on... and two of the assistants on it had to go interview at the CFA's or something (Fashion Awards), which Bernadette attended, and they had a small clip of her interview. She looked gorgeous- wore a beautiful red dress and was really friendly to the interviewers. Just thought you all might want to know.

"Peters is not an obvious choice to play Marie, whom she describes as "the mother of all mothers, except for Mother Teresa." A Broadway musical star ("Sunday in the Park With George," "Into the Woods"), she has no children. And her image to date in such movies as "Pennies From Heaven" and "Annie" has been that of a helpless waif"
But really, Eileen/Lulu and Lily St Regis "helpless waifs"??? .... this writer must know some really tough women!
as Bernadette says....just keep moving on.....

Registered: 5/3/2002 | posted: 8/9/2007 at 10:58:49 AM ET But did Bernadette genuinely seem "tough" in those roles? She was a waif in the sense that she was a somewhat childlike drifter through life totally under the thumb of a male character. For a long time that was a very archetypal role of hers. She very, very gradually grew out of that, but never really has completely.

From: Edinburgh, Scotland | posted: 8/9/2007 at 12:37:00 PM ET I so love your thinking on the subect ... Eileen may be a wee bit waif-like but she soon toughens up. Meanwhile, Lily St Regis is as hard as nails --- a tart without a heart ... and never "helpless".
There is a wonderful BP waif-like character I can think of .... Mabel Normand.
as Bernadette says....just keep moving on.....

Registered: 5/3/2002 | posted: 8/9/2007 at 1:27:49 PM ET True about Lily, but that role was intended as such a broad comic caricature that the toughness was almost like play-acting purely for a laugh. It wasn't expected to come across in a realistic way.

Registered: 5/3/2002 | posted: 8/9/2007 at 3:47:00 PM ET I actually thought of an early role where Bernadette was cast against type as a very tough character and was completely convincing. That was in the early 70s television production of Clifford Odets's play Paradise Lost. There wasn't even a tiny shred of vulnerability or loveableness to that woman, and it was not played for comedy. So you're right, she has done it throughout her career, just not that often.

Though amusing at times, she also played a very convincing spiteful bitch in Impromtu. She even had the urgent and aggresive walk to go with it..... I've often heard some great actors say that they always start with "the walk".
as Bernadette says....just keep moving on.....
