"Broadway Baby Bernadette Peters Knocks em Dead at NAC"
The eyes of every heterosexual man at the National Arts Centre’s Southam Hall popped out of their sockets simultaneously Thursday night, when Bernadette Peters made her entrance in vintage Broadway diva attire: a figure-hugging, silver-sequined, cut-down-to-here and slit-up-to-there number that was a marvel of engineering. It deserved a round of applause on its own, before Peters had sung a note with the NAC Orchestra.
Somehow, the curvy, age-defying singer and actress, 58, managed to shimmy, strut, take breaths and belt out a generous share of mostly Broadway tunes for more than an hour, without any parts of her person ever making a surprise guest appearance. Janet Jackson could learn a few things."

I guess she did ok for our Canadian cousins..

I like this idea very much.

Registered: 6/7/2003 | posted: 4/28/2006 at 2:39:08 PM ET Well, certainly Bernadette might want a breather, but let her just walk around for a bit and sip some water and play with the microphone stand and flip her hair---oh wait that's what she does.
I want nothing to intrude on that special world she fashions during a concert. I think her songs and their placement are very carefully thought out, and it would just break the mood for me to have the local orchestra perform. There's a song somewhere that talks about weaving a magic spell, and she does that for me.
But, to each his own. Jenn not directed at you, just my normal musings but set down for all to see, trying to avoid housework.

and although I hesitate to bring this up, I must: Mr. Reviewer, your review is slightly odd, in that she has many many fans of all persuasions, all of whom appreciate and admire her.

| posted: 4/28/2006 at 2:45:52 PM ET Jean, I agree about not interrupting her concert with other performances. I would guess any performer of her caliber would also want the same. Her concert from the moment Marvin steps on stage the the moment he ends the exit music is carefully orchestrated and timed. The mood is set and altered according to Bernadette's agenda and she wouldn't want to lose that power. It's how she can give a knock out performance each and every time.
As for the reviewer. I think he was describing a particular reaction to Bernadette's entrance. One that could really only be experienced by heterosexual males or lesbian women (so he shoudl have included them as well). Clearly it was sexual in nature. While everyone can appreciate Bernadette's appearance, biologically not everyone has the same total experience. How that for describing it without describing it? LOL

Peters returns tonight and Saturday as part of the orchestra’s pops concert series, and anyone looking for a class in good singing is advised to be there. Peters does something that seems to be increasingly rare in pop singing: she pays attention to words and tone and mood, to what the songwriters were trying to express, and she reflects that in her performance rather than just trying to show off her voice. Though she has impressive pipes and lungpower and can belt with the best of them, Peters doesn’t indulge in the kind of cheap, show-offy, blast-them-out-of-their seats histrionics that Celine Dion delivers. Peters expresses more genuine feeling in two notes than Dion has managed in her entire recorded output.
Can I just say how much I agree with this sentiment. No offense to the Celine Dion fans on the board but I have never enjoyed Dion or other singers like her for the very reasons listed above.

You've described it very well. IMHO I think Bernadette is one of those rare creatures who appeal to both sexes - much in the same way Garbo was said to have done. Although she emits a very sexy signal I think it is a curiously "unthreatening" one and so there is something quite gentle about it that allows women "in" ... hope that makes sense.

Registered: 6/7/2003 | posted: 4/28/2006 at 6:04:54 PM ET Scottie, your comment makes perfect sense, her gentle and sweet nature is quite appealing, especially in contrast to the occasional "bombshell" image she projects. And, since there are probably a majority of women on this site, you can be assured that we are all feeling very comfortable and "in".

ok, I'll let the reviewer off the hook, because the passage that moljul quoted is terrific. I guess he may have been feeling a bit like a

From: Edinburgh, Scotland | posted: 4/28/2006 at 6:50:45 PM ET Thanks Jean, yes, I've noticed that there seems to be a majority of women here - perhaps I should have mentioned that I am yet another woman (Scottie has been my nickname in London for a long time because I am a Scot) and that I was talking from my own perspective. I think Bernadette' sweet nature shines through in everything she does and is written all over her face. If the "eyes are the mirror of the soul" then she has a very beautiful spirit indeed.

Peters dominates NAC stage
By DENIS ARMSTRONG, OTTAWA SUN
Bernadette Peters is best known for playing memorably larger-than-life characters in movies, television and Broadway musicals.
The veteran actress received her seventh Tony Award nomination in 2003 for her portrayal of Momma Rose in Sam Mendes' revival of Gypsy.
So it was an unexpected surprise to see her more private and vulnerable side at her solo pops concert Thursday night with the National Arts Centre Orchestra.
Peters performs the last of her three concerts with the NACO tonight at Southam Hall.

From: Toronto | posted: 5/2/2006 at 3:38:00 PM ET Hello everyone!
Ok, was anyone else at Saturday's concert in Ottawa??? This reporter has no idea what he's talking about! I don't care if he's a fellow Canadian....he doesn't have his facts straight at all!
First of all, there was no Medley of Gypsy songs....it was Rose's Turn...which obviously means he knows nothing about Gypsy and thought that the song sounded like a medley!!
Furthermore, I was soooo happy to see her in GOOD spirits!! She was adorable and talkative and sweet and she mentioned she loved Ottawa and would come back next time! She even occasionally gave the score to the hockey game that was going on that night!!
I have seen her perform numerous times and this was one of her best!
Sorry for the rant, I just had to clear that up!!!
PS. She was as amazing on stage as she was at the stage door, where she stayed and chatted with everyone who was there! God bless her!
You either got it, or you aint!
