It has its momemts but the first act is way too long and there are about a million scene changes which makes the act very choppy. Nothing flows or connects. This is a good effort for two first time playwrights but if Carol Burnett's name and life was not attached to this show, I don't think it would have made it to Broadway. Still, it is amazing she grew up in that environment and turned into the wonderful person she has become.

What! Since when is the inability of a play to "come into focus" sadder than the death of someone from cancer at the age of 38? I would say it's just a poor choice of words not properly expressed, but after all the man is a professionally employed writer who should be more aware of the nuances of what he says. As I recall, Kissel was also the only critic who didn't rave over Bernadette's RCMH concert last spring. I think he called it a "bland night for singing". Not that there's any connection between the two things, but he's now down in my book as theatre's least astute critic.

| posted: 11/1/2002 at 1:38:22 PM ET I just saw it a few days ago. I had also heard they made a lot of changes from Chicago, but I think it has a long way to go before it is a good play. It certainly has some wonderful moments but I just don't think it belongs on Broadway. Though I know others who have loved it. I've read most of the reviews though missed the one by Kissell but the majority of reviews sum up my feelings quite well. It has lot of potential but doesn't quite come together. One thing for sure, the performances of Linda Lavin, Michelle Pawk and Frank Wood are outstanding!

I just hope it will be a success and will still be running next spring when I visit New York. You people who live there, or nearby, are so lucky.

| posted: 11/1/2002 at 6:06:51 PM ET It certainly is possible that it could have a bit of a run based on Carol Burnett's name. That is certainly the main reason I wanted to see it. Hopefully there will be enough people coming for that reason alone to keep it open until next spring. And like I said before, there are people who genuinely like the play itself though I think whether it sticks around for a while or not will depend on how much of a draw Carol Burnett is.
