From: northern VA | posted: 1/2/2006 at 5:37:34 PM ET Here's an article about Broadway Barks from last year-I don't know if this has been shared here? It's from the NJ Star-Ledger.
Byline: JOAN LOWELL SMITH
STAGEDOOR JOHNNIES and Joanies piled into Shubert Alley on a sunny
Saturday
afternoon to attend Broadway Barks, an annual adoption extravaganza
that's
been hosted by Mary Tyler Moore and Bernadette Peters for seven years -
a long
run on the Great White Way.
A crowd estimated at 6,000 packed the famed alley from 3:30 to 6:30
p.m. for
the event, produced by Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS and sponsored
by
Animal Planet, Dogsters, Loews Hotels, Sherpa and the New York Times.
About 25 shelters and rescue agencies brought prime candidates for
adoption,
resulting in new homes for many pets and raised awareness of the plight
of
homeless animals.
Greeting the exuberant throngs, Moore said, "We're especially pleased
to
report that the euthanasia rate in Manhattan has dropped 26 percent
since 2003
- a very encouraging statistic because it means that people are
rescuing
thousands of city area dogs and cats."
Bubbly Bernadette
In an extended conversation with the warm and animated Bernadette
Peters after
the event, the Broadway superstar told how the idea for Broadway Barks
germinated. "Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDs raised so much money for
AIDS
while I was in `Annie Get your Gun,' I wished we could do something
similar
for animals." She and Moore - pals since their joint appearance in
"Last Best
Year" - merged talents to co-host the event. "I adore Mary and she
adores
animals, too," Peters said.
In her celebrated career spanning 30 years, Peters has dazzled
audiences and
amassed accolades on Broadway, most recently starring in "Gypsy." A
couple
days before Broadway Barks, the Tony award-winning performer co-hosted
ABC's
"Live with Regis and Kelly." Did she tout Broadway Barks? You betcha.
And she
always finds time for her own dogs rescued from city shelters. Stella
is her
"sweet" pit bull. ("They have a bad rap," she said firmly.) Her other
adoptee
is a frenetic terrier mix.
Off the wall pooch
Peters shared how she and husband Michael rescued the terrier. "When
Michael's
golden died, that same day, he said we have to get a dog at the ASPCA.
First,
they show you pictures," she explained. "When they brought him to us,
he
literally slid into the room, so we named him Kramer (after Michael
Richards'
eccentric character on "Seinfeld"). He was bouncing off the walls. He
was so
hyperkinetic I don't think anyone else would have wanted him," she
said, but
the deal was clinched when the dog - then named Douglas - "put his paw
on
Michael's arm," inspiring him to announce to his wife: "I'm not leaving
without this dog." Post adoption, she assured that Stella and Kramer
are good
buddies.
New Jersey stars
Among the other notables we tracked were five stars from New Jersey:
Erin
Dilly, from Bloomfield, was a Tony nominee for her lively role as Truly
Scrumptious in "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang." Castmate Mark Kudisch, also a
Tony
nominee, hangs his hat on the New Jersey/New York border, but the town
name is
a secret.
Michael McGrath, who was up for a Tony for his role as Patsy in the
mega-hit
"Spamalot," also commutes from Bloomfield. Another "Spamalot" star and
Tony
nominee, Christopher Sieber, lives on a tiny (nameless) island off the
Jersey
shore. Christine Ebersole, who closed in "Steel Magnolias" the day of
the
event, is a notorious soft touch for rescuing pets with a menagerie to
prove
it in her Maplewood home. Ebersole has been a strong supporter of
Jersey
Animal Coalition in South Orange.
Special awards
Animal Planet presented its Hero Award to Cookie, a shepherd-mix owned
by
Carina Schlesinger, who adopted her pup from a Manhattan shelter.
Cookie hit
headlines for saving her owner's life when Schlesinger was assaulted in
Central Park. Coming to her rescue, the brave dog drove off the
attacker, who
was later convicted.
Dogsters honored noted dog trainer Bill Berloni with a special award.
His
impeccably trained dogs have appeared recently in "Chitty" and "Gypsy."
A
Hoboken resident, Greg DeLuca, Dogsters CEO, manned a table where he
doled out
Dogsters frozen treats.
On a sweltering Saturday afternoon, Dogsters won many grateful new
four-legged
fans. At home later, my own dog, Baron, gobbled a cup of peanut butter
and
cheese treats, threatening to eat the plastic container before I could
dish
out the contents.
Healing powers
Two days after the event, Peters was still beaming: "I don't feel
guilty
asking performers to participate because what's really so wonderful is
that
pets are so healing. They don't take from you, they give back to you.
If you
spend time with your pets, it makes you feel better and you get back to
your
show with renewed energy," she said.

I think one of the funniest interviews with her was when she was on Regis promoting "Holiday in Your Heart" and she talked about spooning with Brezhnev. And I think they got Kramer and Stella in 1998. There was a picture of her with Kramer in New York magazine at an ASPCA fundraiser, and I remember thinking that he looked kinda like my little terrier mix only bigger. And then I was surprised when I read an interview where the guy said she interrupted the conversation to stop her 8-month old pitbull from chewing the phone cord and I thought, Kramer's not a pitbull.

| posted: 1/2/2006 at 8:26:05 PM ET Yes, Murphy was a gift from Joel Grey. If you ask him what his favorite dog is he will say "a cat".
Brezhnev was always referred to as Breshie. I remember an article where Bernadette stated she thinks she fell in love with Breshie before she fell in love with Michael. Men do know how to use their dogs to get women, don't they? LOL
And I think the article that stated they got Kramer right away is a misquote. I remember her saying several times that after a period of time after Breshie's death, Michael said they needed to get a new dog. I can't imagine he would have wanted to get a new dog right away.

| posted: 1/2/2006 at 8:44:06 PM ET I have one little fun tidbit about Michael and his dog which I think is appropriate to share since Michael's death.
In 2000 I was very involved with the organization called FIDONYC that Bernadette and Mary Tyler Moore started and who originally produced Broadway Barks. "FIDO" is no longer in existence but it was for about 2 years. Anyway, I manage events for a living and have a great love of animals as well as Bernadette and Mary so I got involved with a lot of FIDO's events including Broadway Barks and a big gala that never materialized because of FIDO's demise but toward the end of the gala's planning and FIDO's existence, an e-mail was send to various parties involved of which I was one. Well since Bernadette and Mary were not (and I'm assuming still are not) on e-mail and because their husbands were so involved with FIDO, they were both included on the e-mail and I remember that Michael's e-mail was something like Breshie@whatever.com. (I'll refrain from listing his actual internet provider in case for some reason the address is still in existence) I just thought that was really cute that he took his dog's name as his e-mail identity much like I do with my cats.

| posted: 1/3/2006 at 2:10:53 AM ET I love this post. Thanks everyone. Spooning that's great. I was wondering where the name Breshnev came from too. I thought I had the name wrong which was why I originally asked. I heard this really cute story about Bernadette's Golden Retriever who I guess is Breshsie. He (was it a boy?) in her wedding party and one of Michael's friends was walking it down the aisle. The man was wearing sunglasses. After the ceremony all these people came up to Bernadette and told her how nice it was of her to include a blind man in her wedding party.

Though that might be all in my head. And from Bernadette's last appearance on Regis we know Kramer apparently has these "tendencies".
