Symphony hosts Bernadette Peters for three performances
By PAM GIBBENS, Greater Houston Weekly
04/04/2005

Bernadette Peters

One of Broadway's brightest stars promises to light up the night in Houston on April 8-10 at Jones Hall. The illustrious Bernadette Peters will dazzle audiences with her awe-inspiring performance of such famous hits as "Unexpected Song" from Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Song and Dance," "Being Alive" from "Company," and the all-time favorite, "Some Enchanted Evening" from "South Pacific."

Michael Krajewski is the conductor of this special concert which is part of Peters' national tour. Marvin Laird is Peters' music director.
The seductive songstress is well-known not only for her remarkable singing voice, but also for her amazing acting ability, having worked in theater, television, and movies for many years.
Peters said during a telephone interview from Los Angeles that she'd just completed a new television pilot. "I'm actually on my way to Boston to perform in concert there," said Peters. "Last night we finished the pilot. It was really fun. I haven't done anything like this in a while. The character I play is a loving, neurotic, distracted, adoptive mother. The biological mother comes back into the picture which makes it really interesting."
While many other entertainers reach their zenith in their 20s and 30s, Peters' career has not waned and continues to rise.
At 57, Peters has just been cast by ABC in sitcom called "Adopted." The energetic star also received an Emmy nomination for her performance in the popular television series "Ally McBeal." She has made appearances on "Bobbie's Girl" and "Prince Charming" which co-starred Martin Short and Christina Applegate. Peters also starred in other TV movies including "Cinderella" with Brandy and Whitney Houston, "What the Deaf Man Heard," and "The Odyssey," co-starring Armand Assante.

Peters attributes her longevity and success in show business, in part, to the late Tom Hammond, her manager for 33 years.
"He was such a wonderful manager. He always made such great, tasteful choices for me. My career has always been about growing and learning. I keep exploring and pursuing ways to get better at what I do. My life and work really blend together."
Between performances in Houston, Peters hopes to find time to explore the shops in and around the Bayou City.
"I've been to Houston before," she said. "I think I performed at a dome but it's been many years ago. I remember shopping at the Galleria. But I really love boutiques."
Throughout her distinguished career, Peters has performed in 16 films. She received a Golden Globe Award for her performance in "Pennies From Heaven." Peters is the youngest inductee in the Theatre Hall of Fame and has her own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
The ever-youthful entertainer shared her number one beauty secret.
"Number one is sleep," she said. "Next is staying out of the sun. I do exercise every day. I do some kind of cardio and I lift weights."
Before her concert performances, Peters strives to become as centered as possible.
"I get focused by meditating a bit and doing yoga breathing," she explained. "I try to make my performances as personal as possible. If I surprise myself, I surprise my audience. The most important thing is they are there to be entertained and be a part of a musical adventure."
Fans of the veteran performer, easily recognized by her cascading auburn curls, have enjoyed Peters' comedic talent in movies including "The Jerk" with Steve Martin, "The Longest Yard" with Burt Reynolds, "Silent Movie" with Mel Brooks, the unforgettable "Annie" with Carol Burnett and most recently, "It Runs in the Family," starring opposite actors Kirk and Michael Douglas.
In 2003, she garnered her third Tony Award nomination for her portrayal of Momma Rose in Sam Mendes' record-breaking revival of "Gypsy." She received another Tony nomination for her work in "The Goodbye Girl" in 1992 and her portrayal of Annie Oakley in the Tony Award-winning revival of "Annie Get Your Gun."
Peters' latest CD, the Grammy-nominated "Bernadette Peters Loves Rodgers & Hammerstein," is a compilation of the composers' most memorable songs.
A native of Ozone Park, New York, Peters began her entertainment career at the tender age of three. She made her theatrical debut in "This is Goggle." While still in her teens, she appeared in "The Most Happy Fella" and "The Penny Friend." Peters made her Broadway debut in 1967 in "Johnny No-Trump" and in 1968 starred with Joel Grey in the musical "George M!"
Additionally, Peters is involved with Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, God's Love We Deliver and The Gay Men's Health Crisis. However, Peters' "pet project" is Broadway Barks, a glamorous annual event she founded with Mary Tyler Moore which benefits animal shelters throughout New York. Peters resides in New York City and Los Angeles with her husband Michael Wittenberg, an investment adviser.
