| posted: 3/28/2005 at 5:33:39 PM ET Let's say you have a CD burner and a big bunch of Bernadette CDs and musicals in your collection. And let's say you want to put together a "Best Of" compilation or "The Essential Bernadette Peters" collection for your own driving/jogging/walking-the-dog pleasure. You've got 70+ minutes to fill up a blank CD. What do you pick?
My first picks are;
1. Unexpected Song (from live album)
2. Anything You Can Do (from AGYG)
3. You'll Never Get Away (from Gypsy)
4. Dublin Lady (from John Whelan album)
5. The Gentleman Is A Dope (from R&H)
Of course there are many more. Even her duet with Steve Martin in The Jerk is under consideration. I know you guys have some great ideas. What are your picks?

I'll start with these three essentials:
1. Anyone Can Whistle, and its introductory monologue, from the ACW benefit concert
2. Take Me to the World, with Mandy Patinkin from his Dress Casual CD
3. Move On, with Mandy Patinkin from the SITPWG cast album.
These would be the cornerstones of my imaginary CD. Maybe I'd use them as the conclusion.

Registered: 5/3/2002 | posted: 4/9/2005 at 6:27:18 PM ET It's the spoken intro from Arthur Laurents's book.
"All right, yes. I would. I need a miracle. I can't laugh--not really. I can't whistle--
No, it's true. I can't play the piano by ear. When I was little, I walked into a music store, sat down at a shiny grand piano--and I played. Well, you can take piano lessons. Use a metronome; learn control and order. But...you can't take lessons in whistling. So--your woman of science; every walk I take, every street, every year I wait. My mouth waits. But--I can't."
It sounds a little dry in print, but her delivery was heartbreaking perfection.
