From: Ohio | posted: 1/30/2005 at 11:04:25 PM ET She'll be 57...come on you can expect her voice to be pure gold and what it was 20 years ago!! I actually think it's gotten better with age. The female voice does start to get deeper around early to mid 50s...and of course such a demanding role is hard on the voice...but even if it's not what it was she's still singing and she's still singing damn well!!! I heard her at one of the last Gypsy performances and it was stronger than before in the beginning of the run when I heard her!!! So I think you should simmer down a bit anon. about her voice.

From Internet Network: 64.80.29.x | posted: 1/31/2005 at 2:05:23 AM ET I'm well aware of her age and the progression of the human voice, but Bernadette (God bless her) does sing with a lot of tension and carries her chest voice a little too high sometimes. She is my favorite singer-actor and I am a huge fan. No one needs to defend Bernadette to me. But facts are facts, and her voice sounds tired and breathy at times on the recording. I don't think being concerned about my favorite singer's voice is something to "simmer down" about.

And I saw her the November before last and she was absolutly fantastic. She had to tell the audience to sit down after the curtain call.

Registered: 5/3/2002 | posted: 1/31/2005 at 9:55:15 PM ET I have no musical training whatsoever, so I'm probably talking through my hat, as it were, but I find Bernadette to have a quirky, uncategorizable voice that is sometimes prone to strain. Part of it is that she's willing to take on singing very challenging material, but she probably also has allergies, a propensity to respiratory problems, etc. It's always been this way; throughout her career, her voice has always varied enormously in what it's up to doing at different times. This is neither new, nor an indication that her voice is now "shot." Remember, her voice is somewhat fragile, but very resilient. I've always felt that if you're someone who only takes pleasure in hearing perfect, bell-like sopranos, then you're probably not going to be a big Bernadette Peters fan, because, honestly, that's not what you're usually going to get from her. Instead, she takes an interesting, but somewhat limited, voice and works interpretive miracles with it. A lot of times young people who are very involved with their vocal training, have fits over Bernadette, exclaiming about how her technique is all wrong, and so forth, and I just feel like saying "You're missing the point!"

From: Atlanta | posted: 1/31/2005 at 11:20:17 PM ET Karen, I couldn't agree with you more. I am actually a young singer who had to convince my voice teacher that she was missing the point with BP's voice. My teacher and I don't see eye to eye on both BP and Stephen Sondheim, so I had a little music appreciation session with her this summer and got her to admit that even if she didn't like BP's voice itself, her artistry is what is so captivating. She still isn't a huge Stephen Sondheim fan, but I am working on it. She can't get past the problems in individual voices and understand the greater artistic picture. Which really burns me...

From: Massachusetts | posted: 2/1/2005 at 7:00:24 AM ET well I am 18 and have been taking voice lessons for a good six or seven years of my life and when I told my voice teacher that my musical inspiration is Bernadette Peters she was thrilled. Now she is a beautiful, floaty soprano but she said that she has so much respect for Ms. Peters and actually told me to watch some of Bernadette's concerts on video to learn some new techniques...they helped! I was soooo glad that my teacher wasn't criticizing her technique

Thing 2: As Karen says: "Instead, she takes an interesting, but somewhat limited, voice and works interpretive miracles with it."
Thing 3: She adds this lustrous, warm, delightful personality to that singing voice.
Thing 4: Bernadette sings like nobody else.
And, I ask you, isn't that a good thing??

And I completely agree with what you said about the age issue. Look at Rosemary Clooney who lost a lot of her voice and was somewhat hampered by breathing problems in later life. No one could sing (read: interpret) a song like she could.

From: Mississippi | posted: 2/1/2005 at 4:03:18 PM ET In the the middle sixties my "little" sister entered beauty and talent pageants. Back then the pageants were different than those of today- not quite as competitive. We, as a family learned that the judges were looking for several things in one package: talent, projection, personality, charisma and yes, pretty good looks. As I watch performers today I find that is what I want-not necessarily the most beautiful or the best voice but I want the package that the judges were looking for. When I watch and listen to Bernadette I'm looking at a winner-one who is the package. "You either got it or you ain't." In my book SHE'S GOT IT!
