Over the years, especially in the 80s and early 90s, I would read in Playbill or Theater Week, etc. about Bernadette being approached, offered, reading the script for or considering doing various shows. I have no idea how accurate those rumors were, but I thought it might be interesting to imagine her in some of those shows. These are the ones I remember -- Aspects of Love, Blood Brothers, Anything Goes, Threepenny Opera, Guys and Dolls, Chicago, Passion, some British musical about Zeigfled, a concert version of Do I Hear a Waltz, Kiss Me Kate, and, I think if I dug through my things, in 1987 she actually talked about doing a film remake of Born Yesterday. Anyone have any others?

Hmm, very interesting--I didn't know about most of those--thanks, "P".

Here's one, not a stage show but I found this interesting, especially thinking of the logistics involved:

4/3/98-Rocky Mountain News
"Bernadette Peters, who has avoided steady involvement on the tube for years, is
turning to TV in what could be a major way. The singer-dancer-Broadway star not only has a guesting upcoming on Tom Selleck's The Closer that could turn into a recurring role, but she's in meetings for a series of her own.

Wouldn't heavy TV involvement in Hollywood play havoc with her home life? ''Not at all,'' the New York-based performer says. Her husband, financial adviser Michael Wittenberg, ''can work anywhere'' she says. ''All he needs is a desk and a computer.'' Peters plays the love of Tom Selleck's life in the Closer segment that will air Monday."

Too bad The Closer didn't last longer or that the unnamed TV series didn't happen; I think in this day a performer needs the exposure that TV brings.

Here's another (I think this show actually played at the Signature Theater in Virginia with Bebe Neuwirth in the role that Bernadette read in the workshop):

"[Bernadette] Peters is getting set to play Sabina, the eternal temptress in Kander & Ebb's musical adaptation of Thornton Wilder's The Skin of Our Teeth, which is set for a June [1996]workshop in New York. If the workshop is a success, the show could have a public premiere in 1997."

Playbill, May 30, 1996

I found the reference to Passion from Peters herself in the Sondheim.com interview from 1997:

Are there Sondheim roles that you haven't played that you'd like to? Rose, for instance?
I'd love to do that.

Fosca?
They asked me to do Fosca in London. I thought about it. It's a very interesting role. But it just wasn't a good time for me to go over there so I didn't do it.

Re: Kiss Me Kate

She and Mandy Patinkin actually did a workshop reading of the show, but Bernadette said something to the effect that it didn't seem right for her. I don't know why Mandy dropped out.

And I always thought the Mandy-Bernadette-Kiss Me Kate story was just a joke from "Forbidden Broadway."
========

"Peters did have a meeting this year with Mandy Patinkin and some producers to discuss doing "Kiss Me Kate" on Broadway. "You know when something feels right that you want to do eight times a week, and you know when it doesn't," she said. 'That one didn't.' "

Minneapolis Star Tribune, June 22, 1996

Now I'm going to think about Bernadette singing "So In Love" for the rest of the day.

You know who I think Bernadette would sound like singing "So In Love"--a little like Mabel Mercer does on her Cole Porter album. She certainly wouldn't sound anything like Patricia Morison, that's for sure. The Forbidden Broadway parody was funny, but I laughed even more when they took it up a notch with Jerry Lewis and Liza Minnelli. "Marty, get me a Bromo!"

I could have sworn that there was an actual workshop or reading that they did of Kiss Me Kate. I'll have to hunt around and see if I can find something, but that's going to have to be later. I don't think I'm confusing it with the Skin of Our Teeth workshop. But perhaps I am.

Jenn your memory is amazing!

"HOLLYWOOD - Mandy Patinkin and Bernadette Peters are seriously discussing doing a revival of Kiss Me Kate on Broadway. They had a read-through of the classic Cole Porter musical last week and are now talking about scheduling possibilities."

Jean-I'm so glad you found that. I couldn't find anything yesterday and I thought I was losing my mind.

Funny this Kiss Me Kate topic came up recently. Someone at work today swore she saw Bernadette in Kiss Me Kate on Broadway about 5 years ago. I said that she was in AGYG at that time and she said, "No, she was in KMK." Now, this person hasn't a clue about broadway and musicals...she was just trying to join a conversation. She was adamant though that she saw BP in Kiss Me Kate.

"I'm not upset about losing the money, it's losing all the stuff."

When I saw Forbidden Broadway with the So Miscast number, I overheard a couple trying to figure out whether Peters and Patinkin were actually going to do the show because they wanted to get tickets if they were. I had asked Peters at a record signing earlier that year about her doing KMK so I knew she wasn't going to do it, and at that time she said she would have to see about the Skin of Our Teeth show.
