I think she was particularly upset that her husband, Blake Edwards, was not nominated as Victor/Victoria was his creation. So in an effort to show support for the snub to the rest of the company, she declined the award and refused to even show up at the ceremony.

Tony tussle: Julie Andrews snubs nomination
From Correspondent Cynthia Tornquist
NEW YORK (CNN) -- Julie Andrews has never won a Tony Award, and if she has anything to say about it, this year won't be any different. On Wednesday, the actress dramatically rejected a nomination for her role in "Victor/Victoria."
"I have searched my conscience and my heart and find that, sadly, I cannot
accept this nomination," Andrews told an audience following curtain calls. She
would prefer, she said, to stand with 'the egregiously overlooked.'
Andrews' announcement came just days after the Tony nominating committee released its list of nominees for this year's Broadway awards ceremony.
Andrews was the only nomination for the nearly $9 million musical "Victor/Victoria."
The show is a stage adaptation of the 1982 film of the same name, which also
starred Andrews and was written and directed by her husband, Blake Edwards.
Asked if he and others tried to talk Andrews out of her decision, show producer Tony Adams said, "We played devil's advocate in terms of every scenario, in terms of the upside and downside. At the end of the day (we) left
it to her."
The Tony tussle has called the nominating system into question. 'There is no
scandal here,' said Jed Bernstein, of the League of American Theatres & Producers. 'The nominations committee wasn't caught using drugs, the ballots
were not miscounted. The issue is that the taste of these fourteen people differs from what's called the popular taste.'
If nothing else, Andrews will be there in name. Tony Awards spokesman Keith
Sherman said her name will remain on the ballot. 'She's been nominated and the nomination will stand.' "
-------------
The way I understand this situation, Julie didn't WIN the Tony but was nominated; she declined the NOMINATION, never had the chance to decline the AWARD, because:
Donna Murphy received a "Best Actress in a Musical" Tony for "The King and I".

Perhaps you are thinking of Marlon Brando, who did decline an award he won (an Oscar)?

But when JA was on Larry King a couple years ago, it showed the clip of her wearing the La Jazz Hot costume announcing to an audience that she couldnt accept the nomination (or award as i remember it).......my mind just may have added a few things but it looked like she was HOLDING a tony....and i figured maybe she was performing at the TA and then the next category was Best Actress in a musical.....i know that clip is out there because i've seen it....i just dont remember it too well.....

Julie Andrews gave a press conference at the theatre (where V/V was playing)saying she would not accept the award if she won,and that might be the clip you saw. She did not go to the awards ceremony.

| posted: 8/12/2004 at 11:11:54 PM ET I just got back from seeing PD II and it was cute. Yes, a bit precious and preditable but sweet just the same. And hearing Julie Andrews "sing" was wonderful. No, its not the same voice she used to have but it was still wonderful.
By the way, the little "princess" that dances at the slumber party during the singing segment is Julie Andrews' granddaughter.

Julie Andrews had a operation which pretty much ended her singing career--I think it was for vocal cord polyps or nodules; from today's New York Daily News:
"Andrews, 68, has finally settled her malpractice suit against the two doctors and hospital in which she underwent the 1996 throat operation that virtually destroyed her four-octave singing voice.
Through it all, Andrews has maintained, at least publicly, a sunny outlook.
'Will I ever completely come to terms with not singing? I don't know,' she says. 'I miss it very much indeed. For a long time I was fairly optimistic, hoping it would just take time. It's been eight years now.' "
Here's another part of an article from the Toronto Star, June 14, 2002 (there are loads more articles about this if anyone is curious-I used Lexis/Nexis):
"In 1997, Andrews underwent surgery to remove non-cancerous throat nodules, and the operation left her unable to sing. Claiming she hadn't been warned of the surgery's risks, the performer sued two doctors and Mount Sinai Hospital in New York. The suit was settled for an undisclosed amount."
1996 or 1997? Different articles give different dates but I don't suppose it matters for this discussion.

Registered: 3/14/2004 | posted: 8/13/2004 at 11:52:03 AM ET I'm sick of these articles that say her voice is gone. Thats like saying BP's voice is wrecked because she played Momma Rose. Yeah, Andrews may not be able to sing like she USED to, but she can still carry a tune.....just lightly

| posted: 8/13/2004 at 12:22:19 PM ET Actually Jared, I think Julie herself would say her voice is pretty much gone. She has a VERY limited range and can do very few things with it. I don't even think she can sing all that long. Maybe one song and then she has to rest her voice or it becomes very hoarse. She has been really down playing her singing this song in Princess Diaries because she doesn't want to lead people to believe that her voice is returning. She does not consider herself to have any sort of a professional voice left.
She did state once that her current voice might be usable in singing jazz songs and she was supposedly trying to learn how to sing this genre as she has never sung them before. Maybe this is a career opportunity for her but the damage was extensive and truly irreversible.
