Well, I went to the Dallas show on Sunday and Bernadette did not disappoint. She wore a sparkling purple/lavendar floor length gown. Here is a run-down of the show:
1. OVERTURE
(Bernadette appears to thunderous applause)
2. SO FAR
(She talks about how nice it has been to be in Dallas for three days. She says that she always dresses so fancy on Sunday afternoons...and around the house. SHe talks about R/H and how the afternoon will be dedicated to their music. She says that she was really "talking up" her album on the previous nights because she thought they weren't selling them in the lobby. It turns out they were! But she says that they ran out so she will again speak about her album, without regret. "Far be it for me to keep any of you from buying it!" SHe then called it a "record" and stopped herself and said "wait--that is so old fashioned. I'm dating myself! It's not "record" it's "disc"! She then speaks of Allegro and says the first song and the next song are from that show.)
2. GENTLEMAN IS A DOPE
3. SOME ENCHANTED EVENING
(She says that she was never in a R/H musical. Unless of course you count the time she played Lieselin the Sound Of Music in summer stock. The next song, she says, was written by Richard Rodgers alone because they needed another song for the film THe Sound Of Music and Oscar had passed away.)
4. SOMETHING GOOD
(The next song, she says, she never wanted to sing because she always performed it as a young girl during voice lessons. She associated it with "girl" and not "woman." But, she reexamined the lyrics and fell in love with it all over again.)
5. IT MIGHT AS WELL BE SPRING
(She now tells the audience that her "first" was Richard Rodgers. Her "first celebrity" that is. She goes into the audience and asks several people who their "first celebrity" was. The last man she asked said "Jimi Hendrix" and the audience burst into applause. Bernadette looked at him and said "Were you on drugs back then?" The audience laughed and she said "I won't tell the answer...don't worry!" She then introduced the next song by giving some background on the characters in CAROUSEL.)
6. MISTER SNOW
7.NOTHING LIKE A DAME
(She comes into the audience for the low tones in the middle of the song.)
8. I HAVEN'T GOT A WORRY IN THE WORLD
(She thanks Dallas, the symphony, Cubby, and Marvin. SHe also talks about how Marvin was a musical director for Gypsy when she was 13. Now, they will again enjoy the relationship when she plays Rose in NYC and Marvin will again be her musical director. Everything comes full circle if you stick around long enough. She then says that as much as she likes singing with a symphony, it is nice to hear the bare bones of song with just the piano. After all, that is how R/H first heard their songs. She sits atop the piano for the next song.)
9. WHAT'S THE USE OF WONDERIN'
10. THIS NEARLY WAS MINE
(She was visibly shaken during this song. She had tears in her eyes and many audience members were teary-eyed as well. IT was stunning!)
11. HELLO YOUNG LOVERS (with orchestra)
(She says her goodbyes, takes a bow and leaves--standing ovation from audience--- only to return for an an encore. She talks about how she was set to record the album on Sept 12th but obviously it didn't happen. She says that the president said to go back to work and your lives so she did. She talks about how comforting the music was for both her and the orchestra players. SHe says that R/H believed in every word they wrote. SHe found comfort in that, and would never have to be reminded again of when she recorded the R/H album.)
12. YOU'LL NEVER WALK ALONE
(She bows, leaves, and the audience gives her another standing ovation.)

Sorry for the long winded review. She was stunning as usual. I met her after the show again to have her sign my pictures. She was lovely, but she had to rush to catch a plane. Michael was with her and he had a huge cowboy hat on with a shirt that had silver snaps. He really dressed the part for Dallas! Bernadette was wearing a tank top (that heavily displayed her lavendar undergarments) and tight blue jeans. I will ask Kevin to post the pic I had taken so you all can see. She is so cool and hip...you'd never know she was in her fifties! Thanks again for sticking with me for this long run-down. Have a great day!
Brian

Sounds like you had a wonderful time Brian! She did those songs at Radio City..just did a shortened version of the concert in Dallas it seems. Everyone was very touched and somewhat emotional during This Nearly was Mine at RCMH too(as well as a few other songs). I remember her saying that they were considering recording This Nearly Was Mine and A Hundred Million Miracles on her R&H CD but they didn't make the final cut( I know there were a few other songs she mentioned but I can't remember which right now) Too bad because I would have loved to have heard her record them!!

Cindy =)

Jenny, not that I know too much about fashion but, isn't that all the style now?

Even though that may be a fashion statement-or whatever, I like seeing Bernadette wearing more conservative clothing. She is a lady with magnificant talent, and I just think that outfit takes away from her outstanding performance. That's just my opinion.

I agree also!

I'm not trying to say what Bernadette should wear or anything...but I think that the whole bra-showing thing was a little too Britney Spears for me. (No offense to Britney fans.)

But what Bernadette wears is her business...I'm merely stating my opinion.

Ok, another country heard from. I feel like I'm in a completly different world on this-I think she looks smashing in her tank top and see nothing wrong in any way with it. Is it my age? Or, hmm--is it HER age?

Something to chew on tonight...

Jean

I think it's partially her age, and partially the fact that she usually looks classier...but I dunno. I mean, I wouldn't want any of my friends walking around with their shirts not covering their bras, so maybe that's where I'm coming from.

But again, everyone is entitled to their own style.

Y'know, as I read over these posts....it's kinda funny how we can get so worked up over something like an outfit...LoL...anyway, that amused me, especially becuase I was a contributor to the madness. :-P
