Gypsy Librettist Arthur Laurents to Discuss Career on WYNC July 21
By Andrew Gans
July 20, 2004
Arthur Laurents, the librettist for West Side Story and Gypsy and the author of many plays, will look back on his career in the theatre on the July 21 edition of WNYC's "The Leonard Lopate Show." Laurents began writing for the theatre more than 50 years ago with the play Home of the Brave. Among his other works are The Time of the Cuckoo, Jolson Sings Again and Anyone Can Whistle. His candid autobiography, published a few years back, is titled "Story by Arthur Laurents."
Also on the July 21 show will be Playbill On-Line editor Robert Simonson discussing his new book of theatrical profiles "On Broadway, Men Still Wear Hats" (Smith & Kraus).
"The Leonard Lopate Show" airs on New York City's NPR station, WNYC (820 AM and 93.9 FM), from noon to 2 PM.

Registered: 5/3/2002 | posted: 7/21/2004 at 7:25:57 PM ET It was an interesting interview. If you go to the WNYC website you can listen to it now. Gypsy was only touched on briefly. He was asked point-blank if he liked last year's production, and his one word response was "no." He then said that Bernadette was wonderful, but he hated the physical production and the sets. At least he praised Bernadette--if he hadn't, I would have really been upset. But the bulk of the interview was about other aspects of his life and work.

Control freak maybe? I disagreed with his complaint about the sets. I thought it was more important to focus on the story of Rose and her family and not whether or not the hotel had walls. Just my opinion...not impressed with him at all from that interview and seems to follow what a lot of people have said about him. I was surprised to hear nice things about Bernadette...wasn't sure if he was giving out compliments that day...or ever! (Though she totally deserves every one of them!)
