I wonder how she feels about being called "Bern"....I noticed that Star Jones called her that when she was on THE VIEW......don't ask, these things just pop in my head.....

Well I know she doesn't like Bernie. See her interview at sondheim.com

Well, I know she doesn't care for Bernie much.

I've also seen Carol Burnett call her "Bern." So I would be inclined to say she doesn't mind that nickname. But apparently, some call her Bernie anyways...who knows?

There just aren't really any good nicknames for "Bernadette." It's such a lovely name, though. Why shorten it?

It is my understanding that many people (friends) call her Bern and she doesn't mind. I guess you could say it is her official nickname with friends.

Well its just what I have read or heard. Can't remember which one and her appearances on the Carol Burnett show and The View seem to back it up since its quite public that both Carol and Starr are friends of hers.

This reminds me of an episode of the Donny and Marie Osmond Show from the seventies that Bernadette guested on. She had to sing a duet with the teen-aged Donny Osmond, of the Gladys Knight and the Pips song "If I Were Your Woman." Suddenly, in the midst of it, Donny tried to get "funky" by interjecting a shouted-out "Now listen to me, Bernie!" (with his eyes closed soulfully). This really happened; it was not just a bad dream.

I don't remember that part though its been quite a while since I've watched the tape. Did he really call her Bernie? Poor Bernadette.

Yes. She managed to keep a straight face, and forge ahead with the song.
