OMG!!! It was announced today in the local paper that my highschool's spring musical is going to be GYPSY!!! I am so excited right now. I'm defiently trying out but I don't really consider myself an actress/singer so I'm gonna go for minor roles like Agnes and Balloon girl. Anyways, how freaken' cool is that?! On a side note, it'll be very interesting who they choose as Rose...

wow sounds like fun. I find it hard to believe that a high school would be doing this piece. It's hard for me to picture a 14-18 year old mama Rose. But good luck!

Actually Buffalo High School did it here about two years ago. The girl who played momma rose was a powerhouse of a girl, an awesome belter. It actually turned out to be a great production.......nothing like broadway, but it was pretty elaborate

From what i remember, most of the people know the story of GYPSY and only 11th and 12th from the school was allowed to see it, and even they had to get a permission slip signed, and then they did two evening shows. there were a couple commercials that ran that had titled at the bottom "for mature audiences", and they posted that on posters, flyers, programs and everything. So, they did take precautions on who was viewing, but they did it just like it is in the show....I have the tape of it, and i watch it every now and then, cause some of my friends are in it, but they didn't "edit" or anything just because it was a school show.

Yikes when I was in high school back in the day...we did Grease and had so much controversy about that...I can't imagine what it would have been like if we would have tried to do GYPSY.

They did Gypsy as a musical at Sherwood High School in Montgomery County, MD last year and they didn't really censor it (I mean they let everyone see it). But i also agree with whoever said it would be hard to cast Rose, because we all know it is not a part meant for a high school student. The girl at Sherwood held her own, but still it is a weird choice for a musical, especially because it is small and doesn't have ensemble numbers. but whatever, that's cool that your school is doing it as the musical.

damn, she's cool.

When I played Louise in Gypsy, we did the strip tease so that the curtain came in around me.... it's kind of difficult to explain in writing though. I was 17 at the time and it was a local community theatre production -- adults, children and teenagers.

My high school theatre director tried and tired to get Gypsy approved thorugh the district. But after the controversy with "Once upon A Matress" they wouldn't approve it. She wanted me as Louise and I wanted it too. I am stil very close with my old director. I wish we could have done it - She tried again my Senior Year, but gave up and had to choose Anything Goes - which they made her cut to bits and pieces! I was so mad because most of the hilarious moments were cut out. Like hwen Reno sings Anything Goes and it said "Nudist Parties in Studios" She has to change it to "Private parties in Studios" RIDICULOUS. Oh well, it's over. I still wish I could have done Gypsy.

Wow. Things have really changed since I was in high school. We did Once Upon a Mattress and Anything Goes as well as Guys and Dolls and Carnival without cutting any parts to my knowledge. And it was open to everyone. I'm not sure what people think they are "saving" kids from with all this cutting of material. Do high schoolers not know what nudist camps are or are they not able to come to the correct conclusion if they had to guess? It seems teenagers are more grown up these days than when I was in high school and we were able to handle it. What is the big deal. This is why making everything politically correct and sheltering people from everything is not the best way to teach people. Just my rant for the day.

What controversy could possibly arise with Once Upon A Mattress?

The only one I can think of would be that Lady Larkin is pregnant and not married and you find out at the end that many of the woman are pregnant. Still ridiculous.

I think it is really just the title. I know when I was in it I had to explain, "no, it's not like that" to friends and family unfamiliar with the show.
