Registered: 6/11/2002 | posted: 7/14/2004 at 12:56:52 PM ET Back when I was in high school, we knew all to well about censorship. For example:
South Pacific, when Bloody Mary is supposed to say "Stingy Bastard", she instead had to say "Stingy Buzzard!"
In Mame, instead of "... and we're well gang, so raise hell gang," we had to sing ... "and we're well gang, paint the town red". UNbelievable!
And lastly, in Once Upon a Mattress, the entire storyline between Larkin and Prince Harry had to be changed because they thought that a subplot about a woman having a child out of wedlock was inappropriate.
Honestly, shouldn't there be some law where if the rights to a show are purchased, the play must be performed as is?

I don't know if you were kidding with that comment or not but yes, there is a law against it. If you buy the rights to perform the show you must perform it as is unless you get permission from the licensing agency (via the authors) to make changes and they have to know and approve every single change. I can see a word here or there being okayed by the authors but some of the changes people have spoken about here are major changes (like major plot line changes) and I'm sure they did it without consent. If they were to get caught they would be fined.

From: Ohio | posted: 7/14/2004 at 1:42:19 PM ET Yes I am familiar with a professional company(I can't use names) who recently did a Rodgers and Hammerstein musical and they wanted to make some big changes. Somehow the foundation found out and send a notice saying that a representative would be attending one of the performances and if there were indeed changes that they would be sued by the organization.
I agree with an earlier comment...why are we sheltering people from these things?!? I especially can't believe that about South Pacific and MAME...I mean COME ON!!!! If it's anything like at my high school(in the day) it was hell for us to try and do a show like GREASE beacuse of the language...yet the same people who were bitching and moaning about that were the ones who would be attending all the big sporting events and would be arguing and cursing out the refs and coaches if something didn't go right. Registered: 3/14/2004 | posted: 7/14/2004 at 2:20:27 PM ET Well I know that adults for the most part are convinced that what we hear and see is an ultimately what we become. WHICH TEENS KNOW IS NOT TRUE. I think they may have an influence, but just because a 15 year old girl goes to see GYPSY, she's not just going to get up out of her seat and go find a burlesque theatre. Or no 13 year old boy is going to see GUYS AND DOLLS, and want to become a professional gambler. The thing is.....In the world today, there are a lot more things to be concerned about to be censored. I mean, OK so someone 12-17 goes to see a local production of GYPSY, and there is stripping in ACT 2.......you cut it from the show, and it doesn't make sense...you need that number to show the transition between ODD GIRL and GLAMOUR STAR.....otherwise the last couple scenes dont even make sense. But like i said....okay so someone that age sees a showing of GYPSY for one night at the local community theatre.......think about how many hours a week those same teens are watching tv shows filled with nothing but sexual references...i mean MTV isn't a ONE NIGHT ONLY thing.......its all the time, and MTV knows, sex sells......I dont think a community theatre or school theatre would do GYPSY for the sake of "sex sells", the producers and directors know the story, and it truely is a beautiful one at that, ........I could understand if Louise changed the song to from LET ME ENTERTAIN YOU to LET ME MAKE ALL YOUR PARENTS OUT THERE SHUTTER AT THE SHEER SITE THAT I'M STRIPPING SO COVER YOUR CHILDRENS EYES...........but NO, the song is let me entertain you........and thats what people want when they see a show......its not a matter of "was the show good or bad"....its all about how well you were entertained

Registered: 5/3/2004 | posted: 7/14/2004 at 2:35:02 PM ET that definitely made sense. btw, where is this highschool that they're doing Gypsy? (like state)
My highschool is doing Grease next year. i'm thrilled in a way... except i doubt i'd get 'sandy' cuz we have like 5 guys and this 1 guy will definitely get it, and he got the lead this year in The Pajama Game, and i didn't get 'babe' cuz i was too tall- so told me the director. he said if they had chosen this other kid who was a little taller than me they would've given it to me cuz they thought i was a lot more talented than the girl who did end up with the role...
ok sorry to blabber on it.

From: Texas | posted: 7/14/2004 at 2:43:29 PM ET It made perfect sense. I can't stand how schools cut shows - every cast for our shows would make a pact and on the last night of the show, we would always add back in the stuff that was cut. It made for an interesting night. But FUN nonetheless. I mean come one now - kids these days are doing stuff much worse by the time they are 12! It's ridiculous - I totally agree. I hate the fact that school districts are so strict and think that they are protecting the students when in all actuality they are promoting bad behavior. THis may seem an odd conclusion but its true. The more you protect the students the more curious they are and they more trouble they will get into. That has just been my experience. So Again Shows should be performed pretty much as is because when they aren't you don't get the full effect and it's not as enjoyable. So that's my two sense.

Registered: 5/3/2004 | posted: 7/14/2004 at 2:46:28 PM ET i meant that the guy is being cast as Danny most likely, opposite of Sandy. sorry. i wasn't clear about that.
we have no guys in our school who do musicals or any form of singing at all. so our shows are very ensemblish for a lot of girls.

| posted: 7/14/2004 at 2:48:34 PM ET Okay, I've reread the post and I think I have it figured out now. Future Mama Rose is a girl and did not get the role of Babe because she was too tall for the guy who was cast in the male lead. So she is concluding that the same guy will get cast in the role of Danny (a character name that never entered into your post and caused all the confusion) and therefore she will be too tall to be cast as Sandy. Is that right?
It's like a little puzzle.
