| posted: 7/12/2004 at 11:05:11 AM ET There is a relatively supportive thread on Broadwayworld.com about Bernadette, Song and Dance and SITPWG. It starts off with a discussion about her not so great note at the end of Unexpected Song on the cast album but turns in to a bit of a love fest for Bernadette. Thoughts we all share, I'm sure.
I have to say that the cast album is one of the worst produced albums I've heard and the fact that they didn't do a retake on Unexpected Song is just one complaint I have. The thing that annoys me the most is the sounds levels. You have to constantly be turning the CD up or down. Nothing is consistent. And the quality is just bad. It was one of my first exposures to Bernadette on CD and I thought she had fairly poor diction. I really couldn't understand half of what she was saying most of the time. But then I had the opportunity to watch the Lincoln Center tape of Song and Dance and realized it was not Bernadette but the quality of the recording. Seems a shame they couldn't do a better job for her and the show.
If anyone does decide to watch a Bernadette tape of Lincoln Center, I highly recommend Song and Dance. The moment that is described on Broadwayworld.com about her being on the stage completely broken - well it is just an amazing moment. And when they bring the curtain back up to give Bernadette a short bow at the end of Act I well she is still bawling her eyes out. It's not the best musical in the world but it is, without a doubt, a tour de force performance.

I have to say - I'm not entirely impressed by the album either. I like it, but...a lot of it sounds really outdated. And the quality of sound isn't great. The whole turning it up/turning it down can get really annoying. But I think some of that (though certainly not all) has to do with the type of equipment that was available back then.

| posted: 7/12/2004 at 2:05:08 PM ET Well of course it sounds outdated. It was very much an 80s musical.
I'm not sure I can blame much of it on the equipment of the day as lots of albums were produced that year and even earlier that sound soooooo much better. It just seems like an album that was recorded as fast as possible with not much attention paid to quality.

If so, I am THERE.

From: Maryland | posted: 7/12/2004 at 4:19:41 PM ET Yeah, it's an 80s musical...but it just seems more 80s than a lot of things I've heard, if that makes sense.
And I'm only saying the equipment was part of the problem. Certainly not all. And it does seem like the album was a bit rushed. It says in the liner notes that it was recorded in September and October 1985. That alone isn't too bad, but depending on how much time they took to edit and mix the songs could explain the less than excellent quality.
I still really enjoy the album. I just don't think it showcases Bernadette's talent like it should.

Bump it with a trumpet!
