If you could give Bernadette the Tony for one show that she was nominated for but didn't win for which would it be? For me personally it would be Gypsy.

Definitely Gypsy, she completely deserved it, she got more and more amazing every performance. She is truly more respected/admired/looked up to than any other Broadway star I can think of, and I think that proves more than any Tony award ever could. Everyone knows she's #1!

I agree with cuteoperaboi. She should have 5 Tonys. Why not? She deserved them all. Her Rose, Dot, and Witch are three of the most memorable, well-loved (and brilliant) performances of the last few decades. Of course, she wasn't even nominated for Into the Woods, so go figure.
Awards are screwy, even the supposedly prestigious ones like the Nobel. Nabokov and Borges never won, but Pearl Buck did, and there you have it. Is Marissa Jaret Winoker the Pearl Buck of the Tony Awards?

I agree - she should have one for every performance - they were all spectacular! She really embraces the characer and performs her heart out.

Into the Woods and Gypsy...what really pissed me off is that she didn't even get nominated for Into the Woods...oh Well...look where she is now??? statues don't really matter in the long run...

I have to say that yes as a Bernadette fan I think she totally deserved the Tony for Gypsy! And obviously we would think that. Initially I was VERY angry when Marissa won, however I later saw a pirated video of HAIRSPRAY(I'm not advocating this)...and as strange as it may seem I could understand why she had won at the time. Sadly it seems that broadway/musical theatre isn't giving as much regard to what I would consider to be LEGIT musical theatre-which I believe is why Marissa won. It seems that the things that are selling are now "pop" inspired or revue type musicals. I'm not saying that these are necessarily bad-I enjoy them occasionally(I own the Hairspray cast recording). BUT sadly it seems that the class and statue that Bernadette has and that once upon a time Broadway held is slowly fading away. Shows don't seem to sell strictly with true THEATRE stars anymore--you have to cast at least one BIG name music icon or Hollywood icon to make money. In my opinion Bernadette is the definition of MUSICAL THEATRE and is in a league of her own. Just like Audra McDonald is making a name for herself particularly in the theatre. These two women are extremely well rounded performers who do a lot-but are devoted to the stage! Why doesn't this always seem to sell or win?? I wish I could figure this out. I guess a lot of it is opinion and personal taste. However it sadly seems that many idolize the simple-"disney/boybandish" style of theatre because when they go they don't have to do much thinking-they can just be entertained. Yes this is one of the goals of theatre--but what about CHALLENGING the people...what about buying a ticket to see something that's going to make you laugh, cry, scream out loud, or even think about your own life. For me this is great theatre! Everyone is so interested in being politically correct-and all seem to come "crawling back to Broadway" whose film/music/tv careers have failed or if they want to do something "new." Think about it...if you're educated as a Businessman would you just one day wake up and say "well I'm going to go into the E.R. and try my hand with helping patients-" Can you imagine if everyone came with open arms screaming and saying "YES THIS IS SO GREAT!!" No! Those E.R. doctors have worked damn hard to get where they are-they are well qualified and they've paid their dues...and then someone comes in with basically no experience and takes the glory. Thus from our standpoint as fans of Bernadette it's like Marissa jumped into the E.R. that night and took over--while Bernadette who had been plugging away, paid her dues, has done SO much was pretty much ignored. I think we can all find good in Marissa-as after watching the video there were MANY great things about her performance. But comparing her to Bernadette is like comparing Coke to Champagne. So needless to say I'm glad that many of you are on this board and seem to have great taste in theatre!! I was thrilled when Idina Menzel won!! This is a great example of a REAL broadway show--and Kristin Chenoweth is PHENOMINAL--these are two theatre stars(along with Joel Grey)who are fabulous--this is how is should work. GYPSY is one of the BEST musicals EVER written-in it's true form...why aren't there more WICKED's, and GYPSY's out there?? Do we really have to settle eventually for mediocrity?? I loved Disney's AIDA-and am a huge fan of ELTON JOHN's music and think that most of it was gorgeous--but why aren't we putting ACTUAL COMPOSERS OF THE THEATRE on the great white way...so many don't know of the great potential that is out there in composers such as Ricky Ian Gordan(recently wrote MY LIFE WITH ALBERTINE--a HAUNTING MUSICAL)???
I've rambled enough...but my point is--yes in our minds Bernadette should have one...she worked hard and she was in the best of voice! In her own way Marissa I'm sure worked hard to...but what do we settle for when there are no more Bernadette Peters, Kristin Chenoweths, Audra McDonald's, Patty Lupones, or Carloee Carmellos???? Do we eventually settle for mediocrity? What's next...starring in Andrew Lloyd Webers updated version of Song and Dance we have... J. LO!

well... it is a hard choice, i was just a baby when sunday in the park with george came out, but i fell in love with the soundtrack before i ever saw the dvd and fell madly in love with the show, so the dvd just made me love it more, but seeing gypsy live she deserves it and i actually saw the show a few days before the tonys and then right after and just in that amount of time...omg i was blown away on the changes of the emotions and the fun level. so i'd have to vote on sunday and gypsy.
