George M-don't remember her very well; Mack and Mabel-she sang well, but she appeared too young for Robert Preston (or he too old for her) and it threw the love story off (that was the LEAST of that shows problems-I saw it in tryouts); Dames at Sea-where I still remember saying to my friends who were watching it on TV with me-"Oh, there's that actress from George M-I don't know how far she can go with that odd voice and personality..." Oh, well...
You can find pictures from the old shows all over the internet-also on her own site.

I'd guess that the Dames at Sea TV special was filmed or taped in some medium that either doesn't keep or is otherwise not available. Too bad-I still can remember her as being utterly adorable.
Nice to share these memories!

Registered: 5/3/2002 | posted: 8/26/2002 at 2:33:44 PM ET I too saw Mack and Mabel during the tryout tour in the summer of 1974. It was at the St Louis Muny Opera which is a huge outdoor theatre where you feel like you're about five miles from the stage, so it was difficult to register details or experience it as you would in a normal theatre. In Jerry Herman's memoirs he mentions what a mistake it was to take the show pre-Broadway to that type of venue. That said, my memories are not that sharp on specifics but I do remember enjoying it and being surprised that it flopped so quickly in New York. As for Dames at Sea, Jean are you sure you saw an entire TV production? I have absolutely no memory of that and have never read any mention of it anywhere. There was a TV version in the seventies but it starred Ann-Margret and Ann Miller, BP was not in it, which disapointed me a lot. Could it perhaps have been one production number from the show performed on one of the variety or talk shows which were popular then? I remember Ed Sullivan used to have one practically every week. My curiosity has really been piqued by your comment.

Registered: 6/4/2001 | posted: 8/26/2002 at 3:19:12 PM ET Karen, about Dames at Sea on TV-you are right-what I saw was not an entire show but a number(s?) from it, don't know on what TV show it was. I would guess that it was around 1969-1970, and I can very vaguely remember Bernadette wearing a sailor costume, and some kind of cap or hat. She was dancing and singng in front of a group of other singers/dancers-don't know what song.
Mack and Mabel-I saw it pre-broadway at the Kennedy Center (DC); I didn't think it was very good. I also remember being disappointed in Robert Preston, whom I had seen in Music Man in maybe 1960. Maybe that's why, when I talk about this show, I always mention the apparent age disparity-he just seemed really OLD to me.

Registered: 5/3/2002 | posted: 8/26/2002 at 4:37:05 PM ET Jean, you know what? Now that you describe it, I too have a very vague memory of seeing that number on some show back around that time but I can't for the life of me remember what show it was. When I saw Mack and Mabel I was only 17 and not that experienced or critically astute. Also I was just really thrilled to be seeing a show before it opened in New York so in my naivete I'm sure I overrated it. Who knows what it would seem like now? And about the age difference I agree. For a while in the seventies it seemed as though she was constantly being cast opposite men who were anywhere from ten to thirty years older than she was. I used to wonder about that and think it was kind of strange.
