I read somewhere below that the houses for Gypsy had been very poor and I have read previously that sections of the theatre have been deserted for some performances. Why, then, does Broadway.com show ticket availability as limited ? I do not understand this.

I really dont trust broadway.com. They usually have a lot of false info that later has to be made up with an apology of some sorts, I rely on Playbill or ticketmaster.com for the info on Broadway shows.........but thats horrible about some sections being deserted...I really wonder why GYPSY has done as bad as it is......i mean its not the show.....the show is amazing, but something isnt right?

I saw the show last Friday night and had no problem getting two front row mezzanine seats at the last minute. And, I am sorry to report, it was true that the side sections of the mezzanine were virtually empty. (The orchestra looked quite full, however...can't vouch for the balcony.)

That said, the audience more than made up for its small size with its oversize reaction to the show. Thunderous applause and whoops after each of Bernadette's major numbers, and plenty of lauhgter to the show in general.

They may be ending the run with less than ideal houses, but if last week is any indication, they are going out with extremely appreciative audiences!

(FYI...I took a close friend from Italy as my guest who had never heard of Bernadette. Suffice it to say, she now has a great new fan in Tuscany... )

To anon #81etc: I'd just take a wild guess here and say it's more a function of the business practice of broadway.com than the particular show.
For example, I looked at "Wonderful Town" for June, and the entire month is shown in blue--that show had a gross last week of $394,587 with a capacity of 47.9%. An even more obvious example is the play Prymate, which shows all blue for the month of June. That show had a capacity of 13.0% last week.

(blue means:"Blue=Limited Availability:
Availability for this performance is limited or uncertain. Although some seats are still available, they may be scattered singles or limited to a specific area of the theatre. You can place a request and we will respond to you within one business day (may be longer if you are ordering on a Saturday) either confirming your request, or giving you options for an alternate show, date or part of the theatre with better availability.")

They (broadway.com) seem to be giving themselves an out.

I'd just like to point out that although the grosses/attendance for Gypsy aren't very high now, they were quite good earlier in the run. Depending on one's definition, of course, it did very well from previews (week ending 4/6/03=81%) until week ending 8/24 =90% capacity); after that it's bounced around but stayed mainly in the 70's-80%'s until week ending Jan 11. They even did 100% --week ending 6/29/03. Perhaps the play has simply run its course? Makes for interesting analysis:

The box office numbers for the week ending 5/9 were startling. Less than HALF-CAPACITY for the week. Granted, Bernadette was out of the show for 3 performances, but it's still dreadfully low. Hopefully the final week will draw some crowds. Kudos to the cast for giving it their all, even with literally hundreds of empty seats.

Um. Where were you told she was out for 3 performances? I believe, she just missed Sunday's show.
