If any of you are audio/studio geeks as I am, you may be interested to see the remarkable studio where the Gypsy album was recorded;

http://www.coralsound.com/coral_righttrack.html

It really is an amazing facility. It blends alot of old school recording sensibilities with brand new technology, and provides a very comfortable space for artists to work in. It must have been spine tingling to hear the orchestra perform in the big room, and they have isolation booths that the vocalists can record in right next to the orchestra as well. There are very few studios in the world like this anymore, and, as you know, real estate in Manhattan is not cheap. I would have loved to have been there during those sessions even as an assistant engineer to the assistant assistant engineer (etc). They recorded the whole album in two days flat. Astounding. Is that professionalism or what?!

Actually most cast albums are recorded in one day but I think due to the length of the Gypsy album as well as the number of very vocally demanding songs that Bernadette had to sing, they recorded it over two days.

That's true, moljul. I am unfortunately more accustomed to the sort of producers and musicians who take a week to get a proper snare drum sound, spend hours and days diddling with amplifier knobs, and vocal parts don't even get started until weeks later. Different worlds really. I love how the Gypsy album sounds and it astounds me that those sorts of records can be made so efficiently.

There's a really interesting article in backstage.com about making original Broadway cast albums, and even quotes the producer of the Bernadette Gypsy cast album, Jay David Saks.

Fascinating article, and long.

Love the Gypsy cab, Jean.
