Does anyone have a theory as to why the frequent ( hmmm, that may be too strong of a word; maybe occasional is more appropriate) missed performances by Kristen Chenoweth in Wicked haven't received the same scrutiny and press as the few shows Bernadette missed at the start of Gypsy?

1. Michael Riedel doesn't care.

2. No one ever considered Kristin wrong for the part of Glinda.

3. Michael Riedel doesn't care.

4. Kristin has not reinterpreted a role made famous by other woman.

And oh yeah, one more:

5. Michael Riedel does not care.

Am I alone in not being a huge fan of Ms. Chanoweth's? I didn't like her at all, until I saw WICKED (which I did not want to see). She wasn't extraordinary in WICKED, but I gained some respect for the woman. She does have a great presence... but the show is about Idina Menzel, whom I never realized was such a wonderful actor!

I just looked it up on Playbill to make sure I got my dates right.

Bernadette missed 4 performances April 21-23rd because of a respiratory infection after she had gone on numerous times very visibly ill.

She then had a relapse after opening night (probably from coming back too early from the initial illness) and missed another 4 performances May 5-7. She then took a schedule (and widely publicized) day off in July to be with her husband when he had surgery and then another scheduled and widely publicized week off at the end of September. So a total of 8 performances due to illness and another 9 performances that were schedule. Pretty good for close to a year.

More information than you asked for but since I'm still bitter: Marissa Jaret Winokur missed a total of 13.5 performances due to illness or injury and left that show after 1 year and 3 weeks in the role (including previews).

Did I mention I'm still bitter?

Maybe you saw that on All That Chat I asked the same question a few days ago when I saw Laura Bell Bundy go on for Kristin at Sundays matinee. Kristin was out again last night, any word about today?

I did the original post here on the issue and, yes, I did see the ATC posts.

From what I gather from reading ATC & other things is that Chenoweth doesn't necessarily miss performances due to illness, but seems she has alot of outside things going on.

I guess that is OK if the show's producers were aware & gave or give the okay, but I would think one's first responsibility is to the show. I'm sure there are lots of things Bernadette would like to do, but she made a commitment to be in Gypsy and forgoes other things to stay rested and healthy for the show.

What is it with the "youngsters" of today?

I think Peters may actually have missed six shows after the opening. I think there were reports saying she was going to try and make it back for the Thursday show but didn't, she made the Friday night and Sat. night of that week but not the Sat. mat.

I'm not sure that Chenoweth's absences haven't been a combination of illness, injury, and other commitments or working to line up other projects. She's supposedly performing on occassion with a neck brace from an injury she got during the SF tryout, but early in the run or previews she was out with a throat infection, and one of my friends who caught the show last week was sure that Chenoweth had a cold so that could be why she was out at the end of last week and beginning of this week. I think earlier in the month she was rumored to be out because she was out of town.

As for Riedel, I think someone once commented that one of Wicked's producers or something was a friend or source of his so that could be why he isn't going after the show. Bernadette's illness was pretty dramatically timed too. Having that relapse right after opening triumphantly to that rave in the Times and the other papers after weeks of attacks from that mudslinging lowlife and vicious ATC posters with the awards just around the corner. And unlike Chenoweth's absences, Peters' led to long lines of people returning their tickets. I doubt papers around the country would carry the AP reports about Chenoweth's illness the way they did for Peters because Kristin is not, after all, the First Lady of the American Musical Theater.

On Kristen Chenoweth's web site, she posted a message last night explaining that she is recovering from a very bad viral infection, and that her mother has been very ill as well. She seemed so apologetic; I hope people will be understanding about her situation. I feel sure she's genuinely sick, just as Bernadette was last year. It's just as well that Riedel isn't harping about it--he caused enough damage back then.

Yes, I hope everyone's understanding ~ I'm sure that Kristin is extremely committed to the show ~ sometimes life just gets in the way and you gotta take a break ~ it is a shame that Bernadette had to get so much flack for her absences though ~ it still amazes me how so much of the press and public can't understand that these performers are real people too!
