If you go to their new website www.broadwaybarks.com you can sign up for email updates (which is how I found out the date.)
Hope to meet many of you there!

From: Arizona | posted: 3/21/2004 at 1:44:51 AM ET Same here, and this will be my first time.Just wondering if any of you who have attended this event could share a little about it. I've seen the pics online and the Animal Planet adoption tales but I'd love to hear more about it from people who have attended. From what I've heard it's an all day event but the actual show with Bernadette and Mary doesn't begin until 5pm. Can anyone attend this part? Could I volunteer or help out or make a donation even though I won't be able to adopt an animal coming from Arizona (which is so ironic b/c I was planning to adopt a new dog this summer )

Usually the shelters are going to want to do a background check on you and perhaps visit your home before they will turn the animal over to you so being from out of the area makes that impossible. You won't be able to walk away with the animal that day. Maybe they have a way of working with out of towners but I kind of doubt it.

I am sure that Broadway Barks does the same. As much as we would all like to see every animal get adopted, it is completely counter productive (not to mention heartbreaking) to send an animal to a bad home.

Registered: 6/7/2003 | posted: 3/22/2004 at 11:20:21 AM ET Here is a link to one of the animal shelters , New York City Animal Care and Control, that shows their adoption policies. I don't live in NY and don't know anything at all about whether you can adopt if you are out-of-city or state, but I wonder if your own local shelter doesn't also have loving and needy animals for you to take home?
Well, enough of my little soapbox; to answer BleuTwinks questions about the event itself (I've attended 2 (the BB Press Release gives the times/other info that I'm dim on):
1) the shelters start setting up in Shubert Alley around noon, but the actual event starts around 3:00pm-3:30pm--that is when you can talk with representatives of the various shelters, see the animals, etc;
2)the 2 times I've attended, Mary and Bernadette came out around 5:15p-5:30p, can't remember exactly, but there was an auction going on before they came out;
3)yes, anyone can attend, and it is free; there are quite a few people, so if you want to get in the front, you might want to get there before 5:00;
4)there are loads of opportunities to donate/buy things; they had a raffle last year, people with donation jars circulate, again last year for a small donation you could have your picture taken with the lamb or dog from Gypsy, several years ago they had Broadway Barks T-shirts for sale, etc, etc.
5) bring a camera, it's a wonderful opportunity to get pictures of the casts of the Broadway shows in casual attire and hugging an animal!
6) can't speak to doing volunteer work but why don't you e-mail rochelle @ officialbroadwaybarks.org (hmm, is that still her email?)
Enjoy!

http://www.petfinder.com
is a good place to start.
Your local shelters will also have animals that are not shown on the website.

From: Arizona | posted: 3/23/2004 at 12:49:43 AM ET Thanks Jean, Jenn, Mandy, and everyone else. I had already figured it might be difficult adopting a dog and taking it on a 4 hour cross country flight...not to mention traumatic for the dog Both of my dogs come from local AZ shelters and I plan to adopt future pets locally as well.
Thanks for the info on the Broadway Barks mailing list. A few days ago I received an email from them asking for first/last names and locations. I guess they are looking for people in the NYC area to help out if needed. Maybe anyone coming in from out of town could ask to volunteer on the day of the event.
