If it is the Sondheim Etc. concert why is it not included on the CD?
I can't wait for the Sherry CD! Got it preordered.

Fav. BP Song: With So Little to be Sure Of Fav. BP Show: Gypsy Fav. BP Character: Marie (insert last name) lol There's a few Fav. BP CD: Bernadette Peters Loves Rogers and Hammerstein
| posted: 2/17/2004 at 6:35:42 PM ET It was the Sondheim Etc. concert; and that song is on a select few recorded cds (the ones that were released when the cd first came out). I don't have that one because I didn't purchase that recording until a couple of years later.
My guess would be that the song was so controversial that Angle Records decided to delete it from all future cds, thereby still releasing a Sondheim Etc. cd but with one song missing.

| posted: 2/17/2004 at 6:44:34 PM ET She also performed that song on Saturday Night Live when she was on that program years ago. I would so love to have a copy of that program, but it seems impossible to find. She said in an interview on Public Radio that she got embarrassed when she found out later that her father had watched the show when it aired on TV!

Fav. BP CD: I'll Be Your Baby Tonight Fav. BP Song: Dublin Lady
| posted: 2/17/2004 at 10:14:34 PM ET The song was written for her to perform in December of 1981 on an episode of Saturday Night Live. She was the host and the song was written by two women who were, at the time, writers for SNL. The censors and network brass did not want her to sing it. She, along with folks at SNL convinced them that she was not going to be doing anything perverse and that it was simply a "love song". She performed it for the network brass as she was to do it on the program - standing in front of a piano, completely straight faced and without moving. It was the fact that she sang it so incredibly serious, that is was so funny. She gets much more "into" the song when she performed it during her concerts which she did quite often for years. In fact, I think she performed it up until she starred in AGYG.
I remember her in an interview saying that her parents did indeed watch the show when it aired and that her father was a bit shocked and asked her mother over and over again, "you do realize what she is singing about" Or something along those lines. I'm sure it was quite funny.
I am very happy that I have the Sondheim, etc. CD that has the song on it. I think they were sold until about 2000 because I know I got a copy for my sister during that year and her copy has the song.

Are we really that prudish a society? I think it is probably the most tastefully delivered song about masturbation you are likely to encounter. Maybe it was a rights issue. She did sing it on the Tonight Show in 1989.
And if they had to remove the song, the least they could have done was substituted one in its place. I would have welcomed the fabulous rendition of "Faithless Love" or "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" that she did that evening or perhaps "Other Lady," "They Ask Me Why," or "With So Little To Be Sure Of" even with the orchestra forgetting to come in.

LOL I'm sorry but that comment, while very true, just struck me as hysterical. Analyze a lot of songs about masturbation there, PTM?
I don't believe she sang the song during her London Concert. I know I heard she would often take the song out of the show if she was doing a concert in a somewhat conservative town.

Who else but Bernadette could get away with a number like that at Pops concerts, but I probably should have put that as a question, "Has anyone ever encountered a more tastefully delivered song about masturbation?
Actually given the wide age range of people on this site, maybe I should stop using that word.
I checked some reviews I had about the London concert and she did sing it there too. Guess PBS didn't think it was appropriate to air????

How stupid. I mean they let Sooner or Later run on PBS with Bernadette, well, let's face it, practically falling out of her dress but they wouldn't allow Making Love Alone on the DVD! I want a new DVD!!!!!!
