From the NYT Magazine 10/24/93: The question was Does Fashion Matter? Bernadette said, "In the end, no. But since we're not there yet, why not!"
Also from 1993 Interview magazine special feature on NY. "Well, there's always an excitement in the air -- whether it comes from the slight chance of getting mugged or the slight chance of seeing Pavarotti at Lincoln Center."
And from New York Magazine 1992, asking celebs who was the most brilliant New Yorker, David Bouley said, "The most brilliant New Yorker I know is Bernadette Peters because she is gifted with such pure talent but is so compassionate. I find that inspiring."

Those first two really show Bernadette's great sense of humor and positive outlook on life.
And I wonder if the David Bouley quote is before, during or after they dated. LOL

Registered: 6/7/2003 | posted: 1/18/2004 at 10:01:41 AM ET David Bouley is a "celebrity" chef/restaurant owner. He is said(I think in a New York Times interview)
to have dated Bernadette.
Which made the conversation on one of the Regis shows all the funnier, when Reg said that he had been to Danube (Bouley's restaurant) and went on about the food, and Bernadette just said, sweetly and calmly, that she was going there that weekend. Oh, how nice and cool to be in on the in-joke!

Registered: 6/26/2003 | posted: 1/18/2004 at 1:13:23 PM ET Considering Regis didn't know she and Steve Martin had dated, it's not surprising he was in the dark.
I was looking through People (just for the pictures, not the articles ha, ha)and Bouley was in there. I think it was one of those 50 most beautiful issues. Supposedly his meals or looks inspired lots of women to propose to him and Warren Beatty felt compelled to hug him after a 12 course meal.

| posted: 1/18/2004 at 1:54:21 PM ET If you have that People picture or article, I'd be interested in what it says or what he looked like at the time. I know what he looks like now but I'm interested in how he has aged.

Registered: 6/26/2003 | posted: 1/19/2004 at 10:29:34 PM ET Moljul - The article I have is only a photo copy, but if you have or can find the 1997 NYT Magazine cover story on Bouley, I'd say he looks the same. Here's the text. He was one of People's 50 Most Beautiful in 1994.
"At Bouley, one of New York City's top restaurants, the most sensuous dish isn't the honey-glazed duck or halibut in thyme oil, but the hazel-eyed genius in the kitchen, chef David Bouley. Alas, encounters with him are elusive. Bouley, 40, boils and toils 15 hours a day, six days a week at his pricey (dinner for two: some $200) French Eatery. Says food critic Gael Greene of the restaurant: "Being seduced by a tremulous scallop, it's alway astonsihing to realize the chef is also an incredibly handsome man."
Growing up one of nine children of an entrepreneur father and an education professor mother in Storrs, Conn., Bouley was weaned on fine cuisine by his French-born grandparents. He later earned his stars at restaurants in France. Now, he explains in a sotto voce purr, "I want to supply my customers with nurturing love."
That devotion keeps regulars such as Woody Aleen and model Paulina Porizkova coming back; Waren Beatyy one felt expansive enough to hug Bouley after a memorable 12-course meal. And, allows the chef, "a lot of women will come into the kitchen and ask if I want to get married." No one has gotten lucky yet, though apres souffle, Bouley usually has a date on his arm (Bernadette Peters is an old flame). When not riding his Harley for relaxation, he sweats out stress in his Manhattan apartment with a personal trainer. But physical perfection isn't the point."Beauty is like food," he says. "Any beautiful dish that doesn't taste good gets boring very quickly."

From: New York, NY | posted: 6/12/2004 at 3:14:10 PM ET Hey guys! I know this is responding to an old post I found, but thought this was of interest. It is from a NY Times 1992 article on David Bouley.....
------
He seems to communicate just fine with the new woman in his life, the actress Bernadette Peters, with whom he says he is hopelessly, ceaselessly, madly in love. "It means the most to me," he says intensely, of their relationship. When he speaks of her, he changes colors. Her picture hangs near his station in the kitchen.
He plunges his hands straight into a steamer to remove small packets of Alaskan prawn wrapped in Savoy cabbage. Pretty impressive. "You know, it's funny, Bernadette noticed my hands and said they were really working hands, or, well," he stops. "She said it in a much more beautiful way."
No time to get gooey now.
