I think Bernadeete is not a singer or actor... she is a bona finde TRIPLE THREAT. She is a very talented dancer (especially in tap), a brilliant actor, and a marvelous singer. This is what every performer strives to be!

| posted: 11/30/2003 at 12:17:23 PM ET My Stepmother said the same thing to me when I was watching "The Jerk" a few years ago one night. She said, "I didn't know she was an actress? I knew she was on Broadway, but I thought she was primarily a singer?"
I don't like to put her into one category because it cannot be done. She is a great singer and actress. If somebody ever asked me what she does, I would just say, "She's Bernadette Peters."

| posted: 12/1/2003 at 10:22:36 AM ET Interestinly enough I just read an article on her that addressed these very issues. Though I can't remember where. I guess it wasn't really recently but a couple of months ago. It might have been an old article I was reading again. Anyway, sorry for the tangent.
Bernadette does not consider herself a dancer. She said she "moves well" but is not a dancer. Also if I remember correctly she considers herself an actor who can sing. And since she spends most of her time acting as opposed to dancing or recording albums then I guess she practices what she believes. Though I agree, she seems like a great dancer -at least she was when she was younger - and a tremendous stand alone singer.

Moljul, I remember the article you're talking about. Was it Show Music from about five years ago or so? Either that or InTheatre. Good interview though. And you know what? A lot of questions are what keeps this board lively and fun. The singer/actress thing isn't a factual question, it's more of an invitation to air opinions and discuss--just the thing any fan board needs to stay fresh and keep moving along. Even basic or simple questions (if they're not too repetitive) can be the spark for some new insight or bit of information. I say, keep those questions coming in folks!

Well anyway, it seemed to give Bernadette's answers if she was reading this thread.

| posted: 12/1/2003 at 4:43:15 PM ET Thanks for the quote, Jean. It seems you, Karen and I make a great team. I remember the general idea of the interview, Karen remembers the actual article and you provide the quote. LOL Bernadette probably is quite right in her summation of her dancing skills. She knows how to dance but does not have the really extensive training (day in, day out, hour after hour) that a dancer needs. I view her as a very well rounded performer but not a true killer dancer. And she really doesn't have the right body build, it seems. MHO. But I find it funny that she is commenting on not have the right ankles for tapping when I think of that as the one type of dance she does exceptionally well. God, how I would love to see a video of "Star Tar" from the original Off-Broadway production of Dames at Sea.
