I remember the general idea of the interview, Karen remembers the actual article and you provide the quote. LOL Bernadette probably is quite right in her summation of her dancing skills. She knows how to dance but does not have the really extensive training (day in, day out, hour after hour) that a dancer needs. I view her as a very well rounded performer but not a true killer dancer. And she really doesn't have the right body build, it seems. MHO. But I find it funny that she is commenting on not have the right ankles for tapping when I think of that as the one type of dance she does exceptionally well. God, how I would love to see a video of "Star Tar" from the original Off-Broadway production of Dames at Sea.

The first is from an article from 1976 that apparently was syndicated to local newspaper TV guides. The headline is "Bernadette Peters hangs up her dancing shoes for a TV series" and the last paragraph reads "On her part, Bernadette is happy to hang up her shoes for a Norman Lear situation-comedy. "I always hated dance practice," she said. "I don't work out unless I have to. Technically, I have holes in my work so I have to act when I dance. Frankly, I don't like all that sweating. I prefer lounging around. Basically I'm a '30s girl, the type who lolls in a negligee." The next quote is from the book "On Performing: a Handbook for Actors, Dancers, Singers on the Musical Stage" by David Craig, published in 1987 by McGraw-Hill. There's a really good 23 page interview with Bernadette conducted in 1985. "I would say that I'm an actress who sings and dances. I hope to say that more and more. I guess that's my dream--to hone my acting so that I can fulfill myself and show myself in just that way.....I think because people do more than just sing or dance or act, that they don't want to be classified. because once you're classified, they do just think of you as a dancer--and along with that goes a dancer's mentality--or a singer--and along with that goes a singer's mentality--which doesn't search out the whole person. When you say singer, sometimes you think of a person who only listens to his or her own voice." Earlier in the interview she had said "I don't enjoy it when I see somebody separating the two. I mean, I know they're listening. I can tell they are listening by the way they sound. And I don't. I've never been in love with my voice anyway. I think it's just a nice voice. Sometimes, I think it sounds pretty and I can use that. When it feels easy, I guess I live in that feeling--when I'm in good voice and it's coming out, easily produced, and I can forget about it and just sing what I want to sing about." A little food for thought....

Registered: 6/26/2003 | posted: 12/2/2003 at 10:49:29 PM ET There was a cute TV interview with Bernadette and Peter Allen when they were promoting their 1989 tour. He said Bernadette just did whatever he told her to and she responded in mock protest "I do not!" Then Allen said Peters didn't want to dance she said, "No dancing." and he said "Oh, come on" so they called the choreographer that had worked on Legs Diamond and now he couldn't stop her tap dancing.

From: northern VA | posted: 12/3/2003 at 7:47:11 PM ET I read the interview from On Performing during my lunch break.
This is a great interview-lots of delightful insights. Her statements about her interpretation of Marie in Sunday in the Park with George were amusing-she basically made a blanket statement about old people being tired and lacking energy. It wasn't ugly at all-just wonder what she considered "old" at that time in her life. :-)
Her comments about performing while sick are also interesting.
The interview is definitely worth looking for.
