Fiddler on the Roof is a musical directed by Jerome Robbins. This amazing performance is based on the story "Tevye and His Daughters" written by Sholom Aleichem. There were some Broadway established rules of commercial success and this production was one of the first musicals to defy those lay down rules.
Fiddler on the Roof theater show endured many critics because of its “limited appeal” but in spite of them it won the hearts of the audiences with its humor, warmth and rectitude and became, for a long time, the longest playing musical in the Broadway’s history. The story is real masterpiece that shows the tradition cuts across barriers of religious understandings, different classes and races etc. If brings tears of laughter, joy and sadness.
Zero Mostel was in the leading role when the show opened on 22th September, 1964. The screen version was featured by Norma Crane, Molly Picon, and Topol in 1971.
The electrifying show was played on 11th, 12th, 13, August in Costa Mesa at the Orange County PAC and 25th to 30th August in Portland at the Civic Auditorium. It will return to Orlando’s Carr Performing Arts Centre for one-week commitment September 29 – October 4, 2009. Tickets went on sale at 10:00a.m on 7th August.
This electrifying show opened on 11th August, 2009 and closed on 23rd August in Costa Mesa at the Orange County PAC after that it has been played 5th performances in Portland at the Civic Auditorium.
Fiddler on the Roof musical is a winner of 9 Tony Awards for The Best Musical, Leading role taken by Zero Mostel, for Featured Actress (Maria Karnilova), Author (Joseph Stein), Producer (Harold Prince), Costume Designer (Patricia Zipprodt), Choreographer (Jerome Robbins) etc. It also won 3 Academy Awards: for Best Cinematography (Oswald Morris), Best Sound Gordon (McCallum and David Hildyard) and Best Music, Scoring: Adaptation and Original Song Score (John Williams). If has 15 nominations since 1981.
Chaim Topol is an Israeli actor (74 years old), who played Tevye, a lowly dairyman from the Russian village of Anatevka in 1971 movie version of Fiddler on the Roof, announced that without traditions our lives would be as insecure as a fiddler on the roof.
Most critics found the musical wonderful and announced that the acting, music, choreography and direction deserve commendations on many front. Of course there are several critics that claimed that the production is too sentimental.
Buy Fiddler on the Roof tickets to see the musical live in theatre.
