I was there, live, and asked her a question! She was really interesting and her performances were INCREDIBLYYYY moving. I highly recommend watching this episode.

That was surprisingly excellent. I was a little afraid of how she might appear, but she actually seemed pretty together. Some interesting and unusual song interpretations, and the clips from Liza with a Z were sheer heaven. Can't wait for that DVD.
Of course she glossed over and sugar-coated the usual things, but Liza was definitely capable of making some down-to-earth and shrewd comments about performing techniques. I honestly wasn't sure if she was still able to do that, but, fortunately she is. Very good show.

LOVED "Quiet Love." That was fantastic, and sounded wonderful (James, I was overwhelmed too, and I wasn't even there in person.). That must have taken quite a bit of practice-holding the microphone and signing (and singing!) the lyrics at the same time, even though the song calls for her not to be adept at signing. Some parts of "If" were difficult to understand, but those parts were quite fast. Also loved "Don't Smoke in Bed."
She was entertaining, charming, funny, and intelligent. Truly one of my favorite ISTAS.
But yeah-"Quiet Love."
(Yes, being deaf does not automatically mean that you are quiet 24-7. But she gave a wonderful delivery of the song, and it was lovely.)

Yeah, that was actually a really good interview.
I thought the tidbit about Eliose was interesting. I never knew it was about her.
I thought her interpretation of "If" was off, and just not to my liking; which is a shame because I really like that song and was excited to hear her sing it.
Other than that she sounded great.
I loved the clips from "Liza With a Z" and Radio City Music Hall.
She's a lot more "together" than I really ever gave her credit for.

Oh Liza! There is nobody like her - never has been, never will be again. And I loved what she said about doing her mother's songs and what Judy said about that - something like be a first rate version of yourself instead of a second rate version of somebody else - reminded me of what Bernadette said at her Inside the Actors Studio appearance. I LOVED "QUIET LOVE" - gorgeous song. And I also loved what she said about your memories -they are your memories - you're the one who has to live with them. Ahhhh LIZA. I can't wait for the dvd.

What can I say that hasn't been said? Just brillant. I can't wait for the Liza with a Z DVD and I too, thought the tidbit about Eliose was interesting. That is something I never knew about her or Kay Tompson (drawing Eliose). Liza seemed really together and I am so happy for her! I adored...literally adored with my jaw wide open her version of "If". I need to get a copy of it!

Oh, the Eloise thing....
Kay Thompson herself was a precocious child who played with the St. Louis Symphony when she was four years old. She created the character in the late 40s as a joke among friends (while rehearsing her act) before the first Eloise book was even published in 1955 (Liza was born in 1946). The "I am Eloise-I am six years old" was hers before the book was published, and her friends told her she should write an Eloise book (I guess they had more tolerance than I would have had for that kind of stuff, but maybe my friends just aren't that amusing and talented. Damn.). Hilary Knight-the illustrator-said Eloise was her alter ego, and Thompson would put on an "Eloise" voice (Eloise's way of speaking is a childlike version of Thompson's speaking-a very jazzy riff. Thompson was a cabaret/jazz singer.) Eloise has grand hand gestures, and so did Thompson.
Not denying that Kay Thompson was very close to her goddaughter-she lived with Liza until shortly before her death-but....eh. I don't know. The Eloise character was created when Liza was, at least, a very, very small child, and not a six year old. I've heard speculation that Liza was the inspiration, but never really bought it. Now Liza says she is. I don't know. Maybe some aspects of Eloise were based on Liza (room service thing, etc), but inspiration? I have a hard time believing that Eloise is largely based on Liza. Thompson herself said, "Eloise is me." And as for the illustration of Eloise, it was based on a painting by Katharine Sturges (mother of Hilary Knight.Knight illustrated the Eloise books. He was asked about the inspiration, and always said Eloise was Thompson's alter ego.).
I love Liza, but don't know about this one. A bit strange.
But I will stand corrected if I am wrong.

Jenn, what you say about the Eloise connection sounds about right to me. But Liza has never been one to let reality interfere with her memories or her imagination--as she freely admitted last night.
And a bit of trivia for those interested in the somewhat enigmatic Kay Thompson. Her second husband, Bill Spier, was later June Havoc's third husband.

to add to that....in the early 1960's it was rumored that Judy and Liza were approached to do a television movie of Gypsy with each in their respective roles. Unfortunatly, nothing came out of it.
