Broadway Musicals:The 101 Greatest Shows of All Time has had great word of mouth on All That Chat. Release date Oct 4.

On Broadway:Art and Commerce on the Great White Way featuring interviews with Stephen Sondheim,Arthur Laurents,Frank Rich, and others has a release date of Nov 30.

The Rise and Fall of the Broadway Musical has a release date of Nov 30 as well. Don't know much about this one,but it doesn't take a genius to figure out the idea.

The Happiest Corpse I've Ever Seen:The Last Twenty-Five Years of the Broadway Musical is available NOW. Among other shows,Mordden discusses the recent Gypsy revival.

Broadway:The American Musical is the 480 page companion to the upcoming PBS series. It is also available NOW.

Broadway:The American Musical DVD will be available near Oct 12 (give or take a few days).

Broadway:The American Musical CD set will be available around the 15th (give or take a few days).

Colored Lights is now available in paperback. This is the dual "as told to" biography of John Kander and Fred Ebb.

The Sound of Musicals: The Theatermania Guide to Musical Theater Recordings will be available Oct 1. Theatermania refers to the popular website of the same name.

Caroline,or Change is now available in paperback.

Jerome Robbins: His Life,His Theater,His Dance is now available. This biography is unique in that Deborah Jowitt had access to the private papers (journals, letters, etc) to the director and/or choreographer of Gypsy,Fiddler on the Roof,On the Town,West Side Story, and many others.

A Must See!Brilliant Broadway Artwork by Stephen Suskin is available NOW. Suskin is,of course, the author of the widely praised and loved (but sadly ended) Broadway Yearbook series. Pretty self-explanatory.

I'm expecting the Mordden book and the PBS companion book any day now. I am also expecting the 101 Greatest Shows book, and will order the TheaterMania book. I will order the Suskin book later.

Don't forget about the Broadway:the American Musical PBS series Oct 19-21.

Wow! Thank you so much, Jenn. So much good stuff coming up. I also saw on ATC a while back that Mordden's book on thirties musicals "Sing For Your Supper" is now scheduled to be published in Spring 2005.

Karen-
That's the plan, although release dates can always change. I had the Mordden book and the PBS book preordered and wasn't expecting them until later in the month. Dates are usually pushed back, not forward! Oh,well. I get to look at them sooner!

Oh,yeah...

this too. Badger your local Barnes and Noble on November 1.

EDIT: Found this on a fan site:

"Although there have been many books that have focused on Minnelli's often-tumultuous offstage life, this new volume will spotlight Minnelli's talent. The book will cover Minnelli's lengthy career, including dancing with Gene Kelly as a youngster on TV, her early Broadway success at age 19, her Oscar-winning turn in "Cabaret" as well as her record-breaking concert engagements around the world." So if Liza's your thing, then you should enjoy this very much. If she's not, well, that's $20 or so you can save.

And if you're looking for a "sympathetic" analysis of Lord Lloyd Webber (say that three times fast) of Sydmonton, then you might be interested in Andrew Lloyd Webber (Yale Broadway Masters series). Although the claim that "This book, the first comprehensive survey of Webber’s creative career" isn't quite true because of this, which is quite good, and quite comprehensive (up to the Whistle Down the Wind D.C. production). However,it covers his childhood and his private life, but the Yale book also apparently covers his personal life,so I don't know.

Kurt Ganzl doesn't pull any punches with the title of his latest book. What more do you want to know? It's supposed to be out now,but apparently it's been delayed.

The updated Words with Music is available now.

That should be it. Oh,yeah, there's more, such as
this one, but I highlighted the ones I thought would have the most appeal. What a title. Yes,yes,it's probably challenging and worthwhile,I agree. And I'll be the first to argue for a serious analysis of musical theater.

Is that all?

Actually I'm really very happy to have these all listed in one place--I usually jot them down on little scrap pieces of paper, and then they somehow disappear (probably they are in some never-never-land with my spare set of car keys and several other items).

I intend to take my $5 credit and discount card to Waldonbooks tomorrow with this list!

Nice to hear from you --are you up and running in Houston?

Yes,ma'am. Very happy I'm here. I'm very lucky,but still adjusting. I do love what I'm doing,and I have great co-workers.

All That Chat review of Ethan Mordden's latest book

I do agree that Mordden strays into asides and jokes from time to time (I remember a silly joke he made about Patti LuPone). I am surprised that he did not discuss the Cabaret revival, but did discuss the recent Gypsy revival (however, from what I understand, the focus is more on Bernadette rather than the overall show).

Peter Filichia's semi-review of the book from several columns ago

I should have it by this Friday.

Thanks Jenn for this great list! I think knowing the history of theater and performers makes the current experience even that much sweeter!

So you're liking Houston? I think it's a pretty good city - hot, damn hot in the summer time, but lots to and you can get good flights away from Houston on Continental too!

My friendly UPS delivery man just delivered Broadway:The Broadway Musical (the PBS companion book) and The Happiest Corpse I've Ever Seen (I work every other Saturday, and this was my day off.)

First: Broadway, the Musical. Ohhhh....is it amazing. If this is any indication of the quality of the series, then nobody should miss the shows. And look who's listed first in a special "Who's Who:The New Generation" section (included in the 1980-2004 section),which includes only five people...just above Mr. Mandy Patinkin, with two pictures from Into the Woods and Gypsy? Well, not just *listed*-each actor has a little more than a page for her/his biography (Audra McDonald's is a bit shorter, but she's the youngest one.).

This book is phenomenal, and I've only glanced at the pictures and read the pulled quotes and captions. These pictures are *beautiful*. There's one of Mandy in a scene from Sunday in the Park with George that is just wonderful. There's a beautiful one of Barbra Streisand in Funny Girl, and she looks sensational. A black and white photo
of Jerome Robbins leading the West Side Story cast in rehearsal (with Chita to his left). And some old,old pictures, like Fred Astaire in Lady,Be Good. And from what I've seen of the writing,it's just as good.

I took a peek at what Mordden wrote about the recent Gypsy revival, and boy,is it interesting,to say the least....it's way in the back of the book,so I'll have to wait until then to fully digest it. Hmmm....

Jenn
