Hi all! As I have stated before, I am the assistant director for our school's spring musical. Since it is a middle school and we do not have an orchestra, we are forced to use companies that provide a CD for rehearsals and performance. So far, the only company we have found that has descent shows such as Annie, Jr., Into the Woods, Jr., and Music Man, Jr. is Broadway, Jr. Although this is a great company, we have now performed most of the shows. Does anyone know of other companies we could use? Please help!

Did you see this discussion about this very subject on ATC (these sites are probably ones you already have, but for the record):

My high school - Kermit High School, Kermit, Texas - never has an orchestra either - they have always just used a piano accompaniast. It works well enough.

SunnyK-

I don't have any specific information, but try to find a copy of Peter Filichia's Let's Put on a Musical. It's written for community theatres and schools. It's a neat guide-offers synopsis, marketing information, pros and cons of each show, and licensing information, including music,if available. And Peter is working on an updated version-don't know the date.

Of course,Peter's thrice-weekly column is available on TheaterMania.

Sister Rose's suggestion of a pianist is great-maybe someone from the school? Or someone from a church?

A piano is a great idea. Plus voices are more clear. I just did a show in my summer theatre group and we only had a piano. Anyways, it really forces the singers to work hard and project and listen. Orchestras definitely let things pass by for voices that aren't supported well or anything. That may however be a reason they wouldn't do middle school productions with just a piano cuz maybe the students don't have the projection and stuff yet. I know that i wasn't used to only a piano in shows, so our run throughs they made everyone, including myself, do the staging and singing of the songs 2 or 3 times to keep getting used to it.

Another advantage of using a piano is that its great for rehearsal purposes and you can really work w/ the accompianist to get it right.

Thank you all for your help and advice! I can't believe this was a discussion on ATC at the same time. Right now we are trying to decide between Guys and Dolls, Jr. and Honk!, jr. Anybody have any opinions?

i would go for Guys and Dolls jr. maybe, just cause it may bring you more audience, cuz it's soooo popular. I was in it 2 years ago (the non-junior version). anyways... if you already know that you're going to have major audiences then go for Honk! jr (if it's a good show... i don't know it). but Guys and Dolls is always good. (well almost always good, cuz our Sarah was horrible!!!!)

Do the play with the largest cast, so as many kids as possible get to participate.
