| posted: 8/10/2005 at 11:02:53 AM ET To be perfectly honest Karen, I don't completely disagree with your thoughts on the decriminalization of drugs as I agree the "war on drugs" is not working. Though I still feel there should be policies in place to combat the infringement on other's rights that users cause - much like I mentioned for alchohol. As I said, my response earlier in this thread was more of an idealistic hope.
EDIT: Now Karen, how can we get you to stop smoking. Seems like the Fanadettes need to take a road trip to Karen's house and hide all her cigarettes.

But, thanks for your good wishes. They're very appreciated.

| posted: 8/10/2005 at 1:19:17 PM ET LOL We can star in those commercials where the people spew off facts about cigarette smoking dangers.
Sister Rose mentioned something about agreeing that smoking should be banned in all public buildings.
The thing is, it is banned IN the buildings. The new problem as a result of that ban is that the people now stand directly in front of the doors where people must walk past. I have seen some smokers be very respectful about it. They will stand way off to the side and in the corners; but there are others who just don't care if they blow smoke right in your face.
Perhaps office buildings should start opening up their rooftops to employees and have them take their cigarette breaks up there?
Another controversy I realize it has caused in work-places is that Non-Smokers have become upset that the smokers take so many breaks throughout the day.
It's a shame that it is such an addictive habit and some HAVE to have a cigarette how ever many times throughout the day.
I'm with you moljul. Maybe we can't find the creater of Tabacco plants (as I'm sure that person is dead lol), but we can go around to cigarette manufacterers and smack some people.

From: NYC | posted: 8/10/2005 at 1:33:57 PM ET The problem is that while smoking is banned in all NY public buildings, including restaurants and bars, it is not in many places in the US.
(And I'm pretty sure the "creator of tobacco plants" was God - I'm not sure what she was thinking )

Well I have nothing against HER which is why my post blamed the first mortal to decide the plant needed to be smoked. The plant itself shouldn't be blamed.

From: Arizona | posted: 8/10/2005 at 2:23:04 PM ET I think Sister Rose does have a good point about it not being banned in all states. Here in Arizona it's only banned in a couple cities. I used to work in a very busy bar/restaurant/lounge and each weekend I probably was exposed to a lifetime's worth of secondhand smoke. It was really frustrating and discouraging. It's also really annoying that I can't go out dancing or to a bar with friends without coming home smelling like a chimney and having to wash my hair right away. Luckily I'm not very big on clubbing and bars anymore. In this regard (non smoking) New Yorkers and Californians are very lucky.
I was living in southern California in the late 90s when it was banned and the difference it made was amazing. At the time I was really into clubs and bars. Whenever I travel to NYC I'm very grateful I don't have to put up with it indoors. But when I was there last week for Bway Barks, I did notice how annoying it was on the streets. I do think as a New Yorker Christine has a good point about this.

Wait, you do realize I meant manufacturing plant...not from the ground plant....right?
Or were you joking. If you were joking and knew what I meant then LOL

From: NYC | posted: 8/10/2005 at 2:57:27 PM ET LOL - I really did think you meant the actual tobacco plant - not the manufacturing plant. Okay, well God should have figured that the manufacturing and harvesting of tobacco and other mind altering (mood enhancing?) plants could only lead to trouble. Doesn't She know we're only human and we need help? Oy!
