From: northern VA | posted: 8/23/2004 at 12:39:45 AM ET Anyone in or around the Houston (TX) area? I'm moving there for a new job (hooray),and I couldn't remember if any posters live there. I'm drawing a blank.
Liking your job is good. Really good.

It must be a great relief to have the job hunting ordeal behind you. Don't know much about Houston--I've never been there. Somehow I'm remembering an essay about Houston by Philip Lopate that made it sound kind of interesting. I'm off work today, so I don't have access to the book to look it up. Doesn't Houston have a pretty active arts scene? It should be an exciting move. Best wishes and all that.

Thank you. It's a great job and a great location. I couldn't be happier.
Houston is one of five cities that has permanent professional companies in ballet, opera, music, and theatre. The Houston Grand Opera has won a Tony,Emmy, and Grammy, the Houston Ballet is considered one of the best in the United States, the Alley Theatre has also won a Tony and produced/premiered Jekyll and Hyde (along with TUTS-Theatre Under the Stars, also in Houston),among other shows. They're going to do Frozen next spring in the upcoming season. Main Street Theatre will do Promises,Promises in December, which I'm really excited about, and they also have world premieres of shows as well. TUTS will do A Chorus Line in October,Anything Goes in January...Theatre Southwest will do Proof and The Bad Seed....Masquerade will do John & Jen (I'm not crazy about the OCR,but I'll see it anyway) and The Last 5 Years, and I think I'll go see what they do with Beauty and the Beast. And then there are other theatres as well.
And someone's coming to sing with the Houston Symphony in April. God willing.
So yeah-it's pretty good. And I've found a nice site to keep me up to speed as well:

So, who's going to visit Jenn in April.

From: NYC | posted: 8/23/2004 at 2:11:17 PM ET I can confirm as a Tex-patriot (I'm from San Antonio) that Houston is a great city. It's the 4th largest city in the US and has very much to offer. It's driving distance to a lot of great Texas places - even New Orleans.

From: northern VA | posted: 8/23/2004 at 2:15:53 PM ET University of Houston has a Children's Theatre Festival, which I'm really interested in-they also have a Shakespeare festival. And TheatreLab Houston also does new works as well.
Jean-money from oil and cattle has gone into the arts community, and portions of the city's taxes from hotels go to the Cultural Arts Council, which
gives more than $7 million to local cultural organizations. Unfortunately,Enron was also a huge supporter of Houston arts, and that funding is,of course,no more.
Houston has a theatre district of 17 blocks, but there are theatres located elsewhere,of course. And there are four companies that bring shows and performers to the city.
(I was told a lot of this when I went interviewing, because one of the people I met was very into the local arts scene.)
Thank you, thank you, everyone. It's a children's librarian position,so I'm very happy. Storytime and summer reading programs make me happy. I've got my fingerplays,my crafts, and Junie B. Jones. Life is good.
Sister Rose- I also applied for a job in SA,but didn't get it. That city has great character.

From: NYC | posted: 8/23/2004 at 3:52:56 PM ET I'll see you in April cause I'm planning on flying down to see BP. You'll have fun in Houston - there's lots to do from sporting events, NASA visitor center, the arts, Galveston. You'll be able to drive everywhere from Houston - Texas has everything (except Broadway!)! I lived in San Angelo, Austin and San Antonio and I grew up in West Texas from the time I was ten. Texans are great folks in general. Of all the areas of Texas, Dallas is my least favorite though.

| posted: 8/25/2004 at 7:13:21 PM ET Welcome to Texas! A lot of my friends live in Houston and really like it. It is quite humid in the summer, but I am sure you are used to it from living in New Orleans. I live in Dallas, but I have to say that Austin is my favorite Texas city. You are not too far from Austin so you will have to take a little trip there. Texans are pretty diverse. It isn't as "country" as some people think, although we have our share of good 'ole boys! And besides, BP tends to visit our cities regularly on each tour so what more can you ask for!!!
