Frank Rizzo
August 3 2006
Stephen Sondheim will get a Connecticut salute this fall to benefit a theater where he was an intern 56 years ago.
The Westport Country Playhouse, whose annual fall fundraisers are high-profile events, will honor the 76-year-old composer, who has a home in western Connecticut, at a special event planned for Sept. 25 called "Celebrate Sondheim."
In the summer of 1950, the composer served as an intern at the playhouse, along with Frank Perry and Mary Rodgers.
Featured at the event will be Barbara Cook, Patti LuPone, Kristin Chenoweth and Laura Benanti, with other names expected to be added. The performance will be directed by 2006 Tony Award-winning director John Doyle, who staged the current revival of "Sweeney Todd" on Broadway.
The benefit evening will begin with a cocktail reception with Sondheim at 6 p.m., artist performances at 7:30, and dinner with celebrity guests at 9. Tickets are $1,000 and $2,000 for the cocktail party, performance and dinner; $500 for the cocktail party and performance only.
The composer has received 11 Tony Awards, a Pulitzer Prize in drama and a 1993 Kennedy Center Lifetime Achievement Award.
Though Sondheim's last new Broadway musical was 1994's "Passion" and his "Bounce" in 2003 never made it to New York, revivals of his shows have been staples in the musical-theater repertoire all over the world.
Besides the revival of "Sweeney Todd" (a Tim Burton movie starring Johnny Depp is planned), there will be a revival of 1970's "Company," also directed by Doyle, in the fall. Encores! concert series at City Center in New York will present "Follies" in February.
