Hi there. I'm Shainna, 19, new to posting on the boards. I just got back from NYC, where I was lucky enough to see the June 13th performance of "Gypsy"!

I think my first time falling in love Bernadette was when I saw her in "Annie", which was one of my favorite movies when I was a kid. I saw her in some other movies and in high school, I was in our production of "Into the Woods" (I was Granny...not exactly glamorous, lol) and I helped produce our version "The Goodbye Girl". Those two shows increased my interest in her work, and when I read here that she was going to be in "Gypsy", I decided I HAD to go, so I talked my parents into it, and we went.

The show was awesome, it was even more wonderful than I thought it would be. I was just in awe. Her performance was so impressive. Even some of the tiniest things she did made Rose come so alive.

I'd read about the possibility of meeting her by the stage door on this site, so I did that after the show. I think I probably waited about an hour or so, and it was raining. I bought her Sondheim Etc. CD to support Broadway Barks in the meantime. She came out and signed about 20 autographs or so, which was awesome in my opinion. She is so cool, how many celebrities would stand in the rain to sign autographs and take picures? She was so nice and humble, and even more gorgeous in real life. I was a little starstruck while she was signing my Playbill, so I just told her the show was wonderful and she smiled and looked at me and thanked me. I was so thrilled (still am!)!

I'm going to buy "Sunday in the Park with George" and "Into the Woods", probably off of Amazon, any other ideas for "must haves"?

Okay, I've rambled on enough, lol.

I'm not sure if you are referring to the cast recordings or the videos of SITPWG and ITW but I would recommend getting the videos before the recordings. Unless you can get them all. And pretty much any recordings of Bernadette's are "Must Haves". Dames at Sea for her younger days and I'll Be Your Baby Tonight for a very different take on her. I've often thought that recording shows she has an awful lot of soul for a little white girl. :-) Sorry if that offended anyone as it wasn't meant to.

And Song and Dance is incredible too. Okay that should put you in the poor house for a while.

One important thing you must get.....her concert on either DVD or VHS! Believe me, you will watch it over and over again.

You know what's really fun...if you can obtain a copy of her concert from 1979. Watch that, then watch the more recent concert. It's so much fun to see how she's changed (and not changed) performance wise.

Oh I can't believe I forgot the concert. The earlier one is interesting but definitely get the London(199 concert first. Bernadette has grown so much as a performer and I really enjoy her more at this stage in her life.

If you are able to get the DVD version of Sunday in the Park with George,do so. Like many DVDS,it has running commentary. Unlike many DVDs,it has running commentary by Stephen Sondheim,Mandy Patinkin, and Bernadette Peters.

WARNING-rant coming up:
Mandy Patinkin clearly enjoys hearing himself talk. That's all I'm going to say about that.

Thanks for the suggestions! I was going to start with a couple of videos and/or DVDs, then maybe move on to cast recordings after I make some more money. Gotta love being a poor college student.

Shainna-
Check Ebay,half.com or Amazon for used copies. Check the ratings of the sellers and you should do just fine. I know I see ITW and Sunday offered at all those places regularly. The London concert at times as well. If you want to see the videos before you buy them, check your local library. I know ours has ITW and Sunday. However,I doubt many libraries would have the London concert.

I know how it is to be a poor college student. Been there, done that, bought the T-shirt,as they say.

Oh,that DVD commentary! If you had any doubt that Sunday in the Park with George was An Emotional Experience For Mandy, you won't after listening to the commentary. Oh,Mandy! The tears are in my mind and nothing is rhyming! No wonder you were great in this role. Admit it-you think George is Steve, right?

I've gone insane. I'm pretending that Mandy Patinkin can hear me. And cares. Art is not easy,Mandy. And when the day comes that the sound of Barbra Streisand singing "Putting it Together" crawls out my brain,I will rejoice indeed. Poor Sondheim! I hope all goes well with Bounce. There are too many people who want to see him and Hal Prince fail miserably. I bet Reidel is sharpening his pencils as we speak. As usual,I digress. Please be patient with me.

Jenn
