Don't know if people are interested, but in honor of the opening of Boy From Oz last week, I thought I'd post excerpts from some reviews/articles from Bernadette and Peter's 1989 10-city tour.

From the LA Herald Tribune:
"Over at the Desert Inn was Bernadette Peters, who had worked with Peter Allen on the 1982 telecast of the Academy Awards. The certain chemistry existing between the two led them to become a touring duet of talents -- and the audiences over a two-week period here loved every bit of it.
Both performers, intelligent and Broadway-trained, know what it takes to mix and match emotions, taking an audience throught the drama of poignancy and the joys of child-like comedy--all with just a handful of skillfully juxtaposed songs and segues. Theirs was a performance to remember, cheerfully."

From Variety:
"Although the crowd gathered at the Greek [Los Angeles] Friday night may have been diehard fans of headliner Peter Allen, it was Bernadette Peters who proved once and for all that she has matured into one our our best standards singers.
. . . the duo was especially winning in re-creating the uptempo tunes from an Irving Berlin medley they performed on the Oscarcast a few years back. . . ."

Los Angeles Times:
"Her [Peters] presentation suggests that she ranks with Bette Midler and Liza Minnelli (remember this was 1989) as today's most gifted and versatile female concert performers.
If the musical comedy tradition were healthier, Peters would be a massive star. As it is, she's simply a massive and utterly original talent.
Allen and Peters exhibited good chemistry when they performed together at the beginning and end of the show. Their best tandem performance: Sondheim's vibrant "Some People"

It's too bad that The Boy From Oz didn't include the two Allen duets that they performed during this tour. I was thinking that those numbers especially one called "Making Ever Moment Count" might have worked nicely in the musical. I remember after their opening numbers, Peter Allen said something about "they had put together a fabulous evening of sophisticated theater songs, beautiful melodies and classic renditions of your favorite songs," and then Bernadette quipped, "and then Peter will do what he does," which led to Allen to say, "if I wasn't here, you'd have to get on the piano and toss your maracas around" or something like that.

At the Desert Inn there were these little booklets with their bios and a nice picture of the two of them that I don't think I've seen anywhere online. If I can get it scanned, I'll send it to Kevin so the rest of you can enjoy it.

Thanks a lot. I wasn't aware of this tour at the time it happened, and haven't heard too much about it since, so it's great to find out a little more. PTM, I'm assuming you saw the Allen/Peters show? Must have been spectacular.

Karen - It was a really great evening plus it was my first time seeing Bernadette live in concert. I think the tour opened at South Shore Music Circus in Cohasset, MA and also played Merriweather Post Pavillion (near DC?), Sunrise Music Theater (Miami), Poplar Creek (Chicago area), Pine Knob (Detroit), Roy Thompson Hall (Toronto), Greek Theatre (Los Angeles) and Desert Inn( Las Vegas). In interviews, they said that they had been friends for 10 years, wanted to work together since performing at the Oscars, decided to put together an AIDS benefit and their agent suggested they take it on the road. I gotta run right now, but they also did a fun interview together on the CBS Morning show I can fill you in on when I get back.
