From: Long Island, New York & Boston, | posted: 9/30/2003 at 10:09:44 PM ET When I saw Maureen, it was probably only her second time actually doing the role on stage so it wasn't perfect and that was expected. She did a great job though. It was different than Bernadette's but I think they were along the same line and mostly to Sam's directing. They both do the feminine sexy thing to win their guy over. Please no one jump down my throat about this because Maureen was good, but I think Bernadette really makes this role her own. I think I might be biased but Bernadette acted and sung the role better, with more emotion. And again, when I saw this it was only her second time doing the show. By now I'm sure she has it all down and is used to it so she'll be great. After all, she does have quite a career..didn't she understudy Bernadette in Song & Dance? If I had the chance I would go see Maureen a second time, because it's interesting seeing someone else perform as Rose.

| posted: 9/30/2003 at 10:36:04 PM ET My take on Maureen and her performance as Rose (I saw her last April): She is very good and very talented, a little more of a Merman quality but still good. But there is a definite difference between Maureen and Bernadette and it affected my enjoyment of her performance and I think it sums up why she has had the career she has had. Some people just have "IT", that quality that makes people notice them and sets them above other, equally talented individuals and Maureen doesn't quite have "it" and Bernadette does. Maureen is very talented and has had a wonderful career standing by for some major Broadway actresses in huge, demanding roles but when Bernadette is on stage (in any show) she makes you watch her. Even if she isn't doing anything you are very aware of her because she has a definite magnitude that draws people in. And that is the difference between a Broadway Star (Bernadette) and a successful theater actress (Maureen). My humble opinion, of course.

| posted: 10/5/2003 at 7:13:52 PM ET I saw Maureen in the role last evening, and I thought she did a very nice job.
After seeing Bernadette in the role so many times, it was a little difficult to not make comparisons.
Maureen is definitely more of a serious actress, where Bernadette tends to be more comfortable in the role to add comedy when it's appropriate. I agree with Moljul that Maureen definitely fits more with the Merman comparison. She didn't make me feel bad for the character of Rose at all. I have seen Bernadette in the role about 7 or 8 times, and I always want to cry when June leaves, and Herbie leaves, and then she has her breakdown; but I didn't feel that way when Maureen was in the role. It was more like the character deserved for everyone to walk out on her. Though her performance was very strong. She made the character seem somewhat viscious, as a mother.
Maureen definitely has a wonderful voice. I was awestruck when she sang. I think she could have more of a following (of theater fans) if she attempted to have a solo career...like make a solo recording.
I did notice that most of the cast seemed to be a little off in their performances, which makes me realize that Bernadette really holds that show together.
Julie Halston (Miss Cratchet/Electra) was out; she was on vacation. The girl who played her role (I forget her name) did not really fit the Electra part. She was too young.
Kate Buddeke (Mazeppa) was also out. I believe she was sick, so I hope she's feeling better soon. Cathy Trien (who usually plays Rene) played Mazeppa, and she did a great job. Not as funny as Kate, but Cathy does have a beautiful voice.
Michael McCormick (Uncle Jocko) was also out. I didn't really like the way the understudy played the role. Not that it's a big role, but I think Michael McCormick is good in it.
All in all I wasn't dissapointed. It was interesting to see that many people filling in, so it made the show a little different.

| posted: 10/6/2003 at 3:17:08 PM ET That was a nice article. I had read that earlier in the week, and after seeing her performance the other night I could not have said it better myself. That review pinpointed exactly how I felt about Maureen's performance.
LOL I like how he said, "Pull a Shirley MacLaine." Though as much as I like Maureen, I can't imagine that most of the people would actually say, "I can't imagine Bernadette being much better." Especially if those people had ever seen Bernadette on stage before, or at least saw her performance at the Tony's this year.
