My dream came true last Tuesday evening when I saw Bernadette Peters at Interlochen, MI. I thought I'd tell you a little bit about the evening.
First off, I found out about her coming to Interlochen about 4 months ago so the big moment had been building for quite some time now!
I arrived at Kresge Auditorium about 5 minutes before curtain. (We thought we allowed enough time to get there but we were delayed in parking) The house lights dimmed and Bernadette's musical director, Marvin Laird, took the stage. The orchestra then started playing an overture which consisted of many songs that Bernadette has sung in the past. It wasn't even 30 seconds into the overture when I literally broke down and started sobbing! I DEFINITELY did not plan on this happening, but I couldn't help it. She has played such a major role in my life in regards to music and theatre. I had been waiting for this moment for so long!
The overture concluded with a timpani role and over the loud speaker, a booming voice announced: "LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, MS. BERNADETTE PETERS!!!" The announced backstage hadn't even finished his short introduction before I was on my feet cheering as loudly as I possibly could without hurting my voice too much. The sold-out auditorium was filled with thunderous applause as Ms. Peters took the stage in a purple and black sparkly dress. (I'm not very good with describing clothes, so go easy on me.)
At one point in the concert (after she had finished a song), I couldn't help myself and yelled at the top of my lungs, "I LOVE YOU BERNADETTE!" Literally, every person in the entire auditorium turned and looked at me. Shocked, but still smiling, Bernadette looked at me, smiled, and said, "Oh, well... thank you!"
Her set included (I kept a list) :
There's No Business Like Show Business
You Can't Get a Man with a Gun
No One is Alone
Sooner or Later
Second Letter Home/ Unexpected Song
There's Nothin' Like a Dame
What's the Use of Wondr'in?
This Nearly was Mine
Glow Little Glow-worm Glow
Some Enchanted Evening
Some People
You Could Drive a Person Crazy
With So Little To be Sure Of/ Children Will Listen
Being Alive
Move On
I'll Be Seeing You (Encore)
Some notes on a few songs:
No One Is Alone: Beautifully sung and with some new lyrics that I've never heard her use before
There's Nothin' Like a Dame: A real crowd pleaser! She didn't hit the high E flat in the end like she has done before. (For whatever reason)
This Nearly Was Mine: I had never heard Bernadette do this song before and I was blown away. Usually the song starts out very soft and calm and climaxes to this ENORMOUS finish, but Bernadette didn't interpret the song that way. She kept it in her gorgeous head tones throughout the entire song.
Some People: Probably the only song of the evening that I was disappointed in. It just didn't have that bite and energy like I've been used to hearing. (On her Carnegie Hall CD and her London video) The part where she says "Then I'll get it some place else, but I'll get it! And I'll get my kids out!" was very bland. I'm not sure why.
I'll Be Seeing You: A pleasant surprise! I absolutley love her version of the class WW1 tune and was about ready to jump out of my seat when she performed it as an encore!
I needn't comment on the rest of her songs. They were sung to absolute perfection. I can honestly say that this was the best that I have ever heard Bernadette sing. Words cannot express how wonderful that concert was. There were times when I was so overwhelmed after a song that I stood up and gave her a standing ovation. I was literally the only person to do that but I didn't care!
Unfortunately, I wasn't able to meet Bernadette afterwards. Even with my original "Mack & Mabel" playbill and Opening Night "Annie Get Your Gun" playbill in hand, the security guards would not let her fans get anywhere NEAR her! This was EXTREMELY disappointing. Never have I heard of security guards not letting Bernadette's fans meet her after a concert. Her motto has always been, "If they're patient enough to wait for me after a show, then I'm be patient enough to sign their programs". As Bernadette exited the stage door to her limo, she stopped just long enough to smile and wave to her fans. We were all pleading, "PLEASE Bernadette. PLEASE! Come over here!", but it did no good.
We were all able to be on either sides of the street as her limo left, but a police car and ambulance were right behind her so no over-zellous (sp?) fans like myself would run after the limo.
I left that evening very disappointed. I had all of these thoughts of meeting Bernadette after her show and what I'd say to her and then to have her drive away like that was crushing. After a few days, though, I cooled off a bit and was able to FINALLY say, "So what if I didn't get a chance to meet her?!? I saw BERNADETTE PETERS in concert. I have dreamt about this moment for so long and it finally came true."
I am seeing Bernadette again in Indianapolis on the 24th of October so hopefully I will have beter luck then!

I'm really surprised that she wasn't able to meet some of the fans after the show; the only times she doesn't is in big cities (such as after the RCMH concert).
I understand how you must have been feeling (wanting to meet her, and then not having the oportunity).
Talking about wanting to kick yourself about it though; the last time I saw her, she asked me and my friend flat out if we had a camera (she was actually asking us if she could take a picture with us) and I was so confused by the situation that I didn't take it out! I'm still kind of mad at myself! But, I guess I can't really complain when there are fans who haven't even had the pleasure of meeting her....ugg, I'm just venting LOL.

Registered: 6/21/2002 | posted: 8/25/2002 at 2:20:57 AM ET i agree bernadette puts on a lovely show. teasing the audience...taking her shoes off for a few numbers claiming that the shoes are new and hurt. flashlights for the glow worm song and a stand ovation leaving the stage and then coming back to sing yet another song...and that was last june, and i'm counting down the weeks to sept 28th when i'll see her once again in green bay. so to those who have a chance to see her in concert...GO
