| posted: 9/18/2003 at 12:30:44 AM ET I don't know about Gypsy, but I was at Mamma Mia on Saturday night, and they are still sold out! I was fortunate enough to get a ticket from a couple who's friends couldn't make it...they sold it for face value, but the only other tickets they had were Standing Room.
I'm sure it has a bit to do with the fact that most of the cast is leaving soon, but for a show that's been running for over 2 years to still be selling out...they're doing something right.
The only probelm Gypsy has is that it's not a show for everyone (though I love it) lol and it's in a very big theater. Imagine if Bernadette was not starring in it! They are not gonna do well when she goes on vacation in a couple of weeks. No offense to Maureen of course; it's just that other than die-hard theater fans, toursist want a name.

Registered: 4/1/2003 | posted: 9/18/2003 at 9:13:22 AM ET I too have been concerned about the decline in box office numbers. Orchestra seats have been abundant at the TKTS booth, and broadwayoffers.com and Playbill are offering discounted seats not only during Bernadette's vacation, but until the end of October. This has been an unexpectedly rough few months for NY Theatre in general. There is only ONE non-musical playing on Broadway right now, TAKE ME OUT. Things should be re-invigorated soon, as some new things open. MAMMA MIA and THE LION KING are almost always packed, because they are at the top of the "tourist must-see" list. THE PRODUCERS has been routinely playing to sparse houses during the week for some time now, which is why Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick are supposed to be coming back. Times are tough. I will be interested to see how well the much-anticipated Broadway production of WICKED will fare. It is booked into the Gershwin, which seats over 1,900! From what I have heard, the advance sale is moderate so far. And good publicity for Broadway shows is hard to come by.

Registered: 6/26/2003 | posted: 9/19/2003 at 1:54:03 AM ET Well if it makes anyone feel better, I can't seem to find decent seats for the days I want to go in early October.
The weeks before and after Labor Day are traditionally a down time; add 9/11 and this economy, things are even tougher. Last year at this time the Tony-winning revival of Into the Woods played to 38% capacity in a house with 300 fewer seats than the Shubert, Oklahoma's gross was only $447,512 out of a potential $1,000,000 and that season's Best New Musical Thoroughly Modern Millie was at 75% capacity and earned $582,647 at the larger Marquis.
Things usually pick up in the fall and unless I'm missing something, Gypsy and the Boy from Oz will be the only two musicals playing with big name stars or does Boy George count? But as Christine said, Gypsy isn't a show for everyone. The current climate seems to favor musicals with cartoon like characters, froth and glitz. Even so, I do think if this production had been a limited run of four or six months like Long Day's Journey or Nine, it would have been doing near-sell out business too. Does anyone think Nine is going to do well once Banderas leaves?
