I just saw this movie on Shotime for the first time this morning and I thought it was great! Anybody have any thoughts about it?

I really enjoyed this movie. I thought that that the situation was dealt with in an original way(as far as the TV movie genre goes) and that the characters were engaging and funny; they had substance and color. They weren't staid, cardboard cut-outs from your general Lifetime movie of the week.

I thought, overall, that Bobbie's Girl perhaps lacked serious development in a few areas (the grandfather's relationship with the boy, how he felt about Bobbie and Bailey raising him, the boy's grief about his parents, to name a few. Too many pertinent issues were shortchanged for the cancer storyline.)

Basically, the problem was an overzealous storyline that wanted to be 6 hours long, but instead was only 2 hours long. Either they should have extended the movie into two or three 2 hour installments, or they should have cut the cancer storyline out. Otherwise, the narrative tends to get overloaded, and so the viewer gets overloaded, and it's sort of like watching a very busy parade; you don't know where to look.

However, I thought Bernadette's performance was very good. Bailey could have been an irritating character in the hands of another actor, but Bernadette breathes life into her. She makes it impossible for the audience to NOT empathize with her. Of course, I also think that Baliey(with the exception of lesbianism) was closer to the real Bernadette than her other TV movie roles; she seemed to almost be playing herself.

My favorite Bernadette-part was watching Bailey trying to drive on the "right/wrong" side of the road. Finally, she asks for the kid's help. And then afterwards, when Bobbie and Baliey are meeting with the judge, and trying to look responsible, Bailey blurts out that she let the kid drive. ("He's only 10 years old and he drives! It's amazing....") lol.

All in all, a good, enjoyable movie with some nice performances despite the narrative flaws.

Regis: And look at all this hair. My God. That's a lot of hair. Look at this. How does hair get this way?
Bernadette: Um.. it sort of grew out of my head like this.

I think the Grandfather and Allan having such "Cold" personalities was fine. I'm sorry if I'm stereotyping, but Europeans tend to have very cold personalities compared to Americans. They deal with death very differently from us, and I think they were trying to emphasize that by showing their reaction to death and cancer compared to Bailey's (an American) reaction.
