Seems unlikely she would take a vacation now if she were really trying to get out of her original contract. Not that I know what I'm talking about--it's just a thought.

| posted: 9/3/2003 at 5:37:43 PM ET Well I'm not trying to continue the rumor mill but someone posted on All That Chat that the producers didn't want to let her out of her contract and instead offered to give her an early vacation so she could rest her voice so this early vacation seems to confirm that. Personally I find no unprofessional manner in asking to shorten your contract. She wouldn't request it unless she really needed to. If she got into the role and realized her voice would not survive, then the smart thing for her to do would be to shorten her run. Of course with the show completely built around her, I can't blame the producers for not liking that idea. And I'm sure she is bright enough to realize they weren't going to easily agree to it. I don't see any shame in the fact that she needed time off to give her voice a rest after several months in a killer role. Maybe she thought it was best just to make the run short and that didn't work out so maybe a short rest will help her voice enough so she can continue through her contract. I'm assuming she will probably still take a week or two off in December as she usually does. Maybe a few short vacations througout her year will keep her in the show (which makes the fans and the producers happy) and keep her voice from having temporary or permanent problems. After all, her number one priority should be her health.
Someone stated earlier that they thought she would extend her contract much like she did in AGYG. I would personally be very surprised if she did. AGYG was a much easier show (though no walk in the park) on her vocally and physically. It seems every interview she gives about Gypsy she mentions what a difficult role it is. I don't think she is complaining or being weak - it is just fact - it is a killer role. Before any of these rumors started, I always felt this would be a role she would do for one year and no more. I would imagine it is just too taxing for anybody. Of course that is just my opinion. I guess we all won't know until she makes up her mind next spring.
Whatever she decides will be fine with me. It's her life, her career and her voice and she needs to protect them all. Her fans should not expect anything less.

Registered: 3/10/2001 | posted: 9/3/2003 at 7:31:42 PM ET I'm actually really relieved this was finally officially announced. Its funny how fast rumors spread and how sure people think they are of something that was never even confirmed.
From what I gather and from what I have read on some boards...someone started this whole thing by saying something like " A friend of a friend of mine said...." and then it grew from there.
I told you all the truth would be annouced when Bernadette and the producers were ready to announce it to the public This is why I never say anything without it being confirmed first and hopefully the people who started this rumor have learned that now as well.
I find it pretty funny that the forum on which this whole thing started( with all the wild rumors)was the same to "announce" Bernadette's vacaion at the end of the month... http://www.talkinbroadway.com/forum/messages/16380.html

There was rumor that she was going to take the show over to London (please nobody start asking if it's true. If it is someone will eventually announce it), but I really doubt she would considering how taxing it is on her voice. lol Besides, all of her American fans would miss her too much

| posted: 9/3/2003 at 10:18:09 PM ET Hahaha That's why I said, "There was a rumor." That way people know it's not true until an official representative says something. For all intense purposes, I think we can assume she won't be taking the show over there.

Actually, I think it would be neat if Bernadette took Gypsy to London. (Are they actually planning on doing a production of Gypsy over there -- regardless of who stars as Mamma Rose, I mean?) Our friends in the UK don't get spoiled like we do (or, should I say, anyone in, near, or who can get to NY, is spoiled...) I think, if ever she decided to do another run of ANY kind of musical, that it would be neat for both her and Londoners (Londonites?)if she did something overseas for a year or so.

Regis: And look at all this hair. My God. That's a lot of hair. Look at this. How does hair get this way?
Bernadette: Um.. it sort of grew out of my head like this.

| posted: 9/4/2003 at 10:48:07 AM ET I know what you mean UCFGuardgirl. My parents planned a visit to NYC at the end of May and we had great seats to see Gypsy. But they had to cancel the trip due to a family emergency. So now they have rescheduled for the beginning of November. The first thing they said was for me to get tickets to Gypsy. I was afraid we might miss Bernadette again. So I'm breathing a little easier too.
