Hey everyone! Just a quick question. I know Bernadette appeared on the Carol Burnett show quite a few times. Does anyone know what songs/skits she performed on there? I've seen some footage of a song called Lulu's Back In Town or something like that, and she was tap dancing. Anything else you know of?

Well there are the two probably most famous ones - the Exorcist Skit (just rewatched that this weekend) - hysterical - and the one that I can't remember the name but it has Carol as an orphan who finds her long lost uncles and they put on a show where Carol's character becomes the star - and is jealous of Bernadette's involvement. Man, its on the tip of my tongue.

That one is "Little Miss Showbiz" with Anthony Newley. It seems to me she must have been a guest about ten times or so. It would take a while to try and reconstruct all her appearances. Since it seems that Carol Burnett owns the rights to her shows, I wish she would just release a giant collection of Carol/Bernadette videos. I'm sure it would sell really well.

Thank you, Karen. I kept coming up with Little Miss Marker which was probably the Shirley Temple movie it was based on.

Actually many of Carol Burnett's shows are released on video under a series called, My Personal Best. I know there are at least 2 videos with appearances by Bernadette. In fact that is how I saw Little Miss Showbiz. The videos are nice because they show the big musical numbers they used to do. They are unable to show those numbers during viewings in syndication. If you are interested, they are on ebay a lot.

Moljul, is the video you're talking about the one with the Carol Burnett reunion show (which was on TV) or is it an actual collection of some of her shows (not clips, but the full episodes?) Because the only one I've seen thus far is the reunion video. Do you know where the other one (that you're referring to) can be found?

I adore the Carol Burnett show. Used to watch it all the time. (The older ones I caught in rerun, but the newer show I got to see in its first airing.)

There's another Bernadette guest appearance that I can recall from the newer Carol Burnett show. Bernadette and Carol played partners who came up with catchy commercial jingles. Mid-skit, Bernadette gets offered the opportunity to go solo, but only if she'll ditch Carol's music and lyrics. The one scene I remember is the one where Bernadette returns from the recording studio (after being asked to go to LA) and she relays this news to Carol, who is her best friend (God, I wish I could remember the names of the characters they play in the skit.) Anyway. It went something like this:

Carol: They asked you to sign a contract? Wow. What did you say?
Bernadette (pacing and hyperventilating): Well, first I was in shock and dumbfounded and of course, I said yes. But then I thought of you and so I said no. But then I thought, "I'm never going to get an opportunity like this again," so I said yes. But then I knew you'd be heartbroken so then I said no. But then I really wanted it, so then I said yes. But then I thought no, I can't do that to you, and so I SAID NO, AND I'VE GOT NEWS FOR YOU, THEY THINK I'M VERY UNSTABLE!!

I always thought that was the funniest part in the skit. But Bernadette sang in it, so that skit is memorable for me.

***************
Regis: And look at all this hair. My God. That's a lot of hair. Look at this. How does hair get this way?
Bernadette: Um.. it sort of grew out of my head like this.

No its not the reunion. There are several tapes in the series. Each individual tape has two episodes. Try ebay.

UCFGuardgirl,
I have on tape the one in which Bernadette and Carol played partners who come up with commercial jingles. I believe their character names were Arlene (Carol) and Kate (Bernadette). Bernadette sings a song called "The Next Dream", this song is absolutely beautiful!! I just love this song! Anyways, I have lots of stuff....I won an ebay auction in which I received over four and a half hours of video footage of Bernadette...it's absolute heaven...hehe!

Back in the late 80s, WOR actually showed many of the musical numbers. I remember watching an interview with Burnett where she said that they hadn't been seen, maybe since the show first aired because of the rights or maybe the costs involved with clearing the rights. Many of the sketches used the work of one composer/lyricist or team. The ones with Peters that I saw were:

Warren & Dubin (That's the Lulu's back in town one)

Bock & Harnick (featured Roddy McDowell, Korman, Burnett and featured songs from Fiddler and She Loves Me. I think this one is my favorite. Peters got to sing "Dear Friend" and "Will He Like Me")

"Little Miss Showbiz" (the syndicated version was truncated compared to what was on the commercial release)

Cole Porter (featuring Steve Lawrence, Vicki Lawrence and Burnett)

I can't remember any others right now. Here's a link to a site describing many of the episodes: http://www-personal.umich.edu/~mcgee/cbsguide.txt

Thanks for the link. I have three of the Carol Burnett tapes with Bernadette, but haven't been able to find any additional ones for sale.

I have the Little Miss Showbiz one on tape, but I have the entire thing and I taped it off of television. It was 2 or 3 years ago, and it was on at like 4am; but I definitely have the entire episode.

Carol Burnett said at her book signing that they will probably be releasing episodes on DVD soon; hopefully the entire episodes. Also, Carol Burnett and Julie Andrews may be doing a special for television with clips from their old shows.
