Bernadette-Fanatic..I wish I had your self-control. I had to listen to some of the songs and now I know I won't be as excited when I get the album. But I refuse to listen to Everything's Coming Up Roses and Rose's Turn until the CD comes out because AOL sucks and when I try to listen to a song it stops every couple of seconds. I sort of wish Angel Records didn't put these up until after the CD came out.

U'r not the only one w/ listening issues.

My internet connection isn't 64k, it's less than that, so mine keeps breaking up every 2 seconds. So it's hard to listen to these.

But I love this!! thanks Bwaybaby for spotting this!

Take care,
Stacy

Isn't this exciting?
I just started "Ghost Light" (which explains the opening of "Gypsy" -- so cool to know that) and Frank Rich talks about the anticipation of a new record in his 1950s house (first 78s, then 33-1/3 albums when they were a new thing). I am so feeling that sense of wonder...
Like Bernadette-Fanatic, I want to hear the CD for the first time on my good stereo at home. I want to have a glass of wine, no distractions, lights low, and just -- take it all in.
(I was going to just listen to a CLIP on the Web site (canNOT believe they put the whole thing up) but it won't work on my computer. And that's a good thing, as Martha would say.) I only listen to BP's CDs on the stereo with good speakers now -- won't spoil the sound and enjoyment listening on the computer or in the car (tho the car's speakers aren't bad).

The anticipation of the wait is exciting (and a little weird: I can feel myself holding my breath thinking about this CD).
So I'm saving myself for the CD on Tuesday.... Utter JOY.

I didn't listen to all the numbers-would have taken too long. However, listening to the ones that I did (Rose's Turn and Everything's Coming Up Roses) download did not spoil the CD for me. In fact,I'm looking forward to it more now than ever.

The Chicago DVD will be released that same day as well,so I have that to look forward to as well.

Anonymous-
If you enjoy Frank Rich's writings, you should check out his collection of reviews from The New York Times-it's called Hot Seat and includes his reviews from the early 80s to early 90s,when he stepped down. What makes this especially neat is that he wrote little comments at the end of each review(no more than 2-4 sentences at the most) clarifying points, giving an additional opinion,or giving additional information about the show or the people involved in the show. However,it's a *huge* hardback and full price is $45 (in the United States). However,Amazon has used copies, and half.com might as well (as may other online resources). I haven't read the entire thing-just bits and pieces. Although I don't always agree with his opinions (now,on the performances,I can't judge, but I'm thinking about the score, the book, etc),but it's a great time travel.
:-)

I don't always enjoy collections of criticisms (I don't know why-just not something that I actively seek when looking for something to read),but this and Steven Suskin's fabulous Broadway Yearbook are different. Suskin has a sense of humor and empathizes more with a struggling show than did Rich. I am really looking forward to his take on this season. However,it probably won't be published until next year. His yearbooks from the 1999-2000,2000-2001,and 2001-2002 seasons are gold mines for Broadway enthusiasts. He reviews every show in that particular season (as well as the Encore! shows and shows/pieces that he particularly wanted to include, such as the Wise Guys/Gold-now Bounce-I can't remember what the show was called when he saw it-workshop). Wonderful, wonderful writing.

Yes,I am aware that I am completely off subject, ladies and gents.

I deliberately saved one particular number until Tuesday, although I am anxious to hear Kate Buddeke for the first time. And the final "Let Me Entertain You"-which,from what I understand,is quite lengthy.

Now they don't have all the songs on there--just some of them. I'm glad I got to listen to everything before they did that. It's so amazing!

This from Frank Rich, upon seeing his first-ever musical:
"Each moment that followed passed too quickly, each shock of delight slid instantaneously, cruelly, into memory -- a pileup of double-edged sensation in which exhilaration turned instantly inside out into a kind of sorrow.
"If only there was a way to hold each moment, to freeze it in time and put it in my pocket and preserve it forever, before it was hopelessly lost.
"When the show was over, the curtain falling for good, the lights coming back on, the theater emptying. I wanted to relive the whole afternoon immediately. I wanted to relive the afternoon not just once, really, but again and again, in slow motion and fast..."

That is **exactly** how I feel about "Gypsy" and BP as Madame Rose. Other shows I've wanted to see again. But, this one, I simply can't get enough of it.
I do so hope it is filmed!!

P.S. Thanks, jmslsu01. I look into those reading suggestions. I hope Suskin will be observing "Gypsy" and "Rose" evolve and give due credit.

I could be way off base, but I suspect that Angel Records put all of the songs on the website for such a short time to give Gypsy enthusiasts a taste of what's to come, and that's the reason why they now only have about half of the songs on the site, instead of the whole CD. If that was their reasoning, then good for them! Very clever marketing technique!

I had to try 3 computers before I finally got it to work, and was able to listen to the clips. But FINALLY, it did, and I am so glad because I love it. I saw it about a month ago, but Bernadette was a little sick, and while she was amazing, her voice wasn't as incredible as it usually is. So hearing the CD was really fun, and now I can't wait for Tuesday!
On another note, to whoever posted about reading Ghost Light- this is my favorite book of all time. It was so entertaining, yet so touching at the same time, and I've never been able to relate to a book like I related to Frank Rich's. So enjoy- and you'll have to let me know how you liked it when you're finished.

I'm actually glad they removed most of the songs from the site. I certainly would have listened to that brilliant Rose's Turn 1000 times before tuesday, and having only heard it 2 times, I will still be anxious to get the CD Tuesday morning. Same with "Some People."
They did leave "Everything's Coming up Roses" though...

Anonymous-it's certainly possible that Suskin has seen Gypsy several times-I specifically remember that he saw the musical composed by Harry Connick Jr (I'm drawing a blank on the name) twice to see if his impressions changed upon a second viewing (they didn't). Suskin also gives a history of the show's creation and the show's reception-his pieces are thorough.

Anyone know anything about the CD insert/booklet? Will it include pictures, lyrics,a brief commentary from Mendes,Laurents,or anyone else? Those are always nice-although I wouldn't mind if the lyrics aren't included.
