I saw the show midway through previews and Bernadette's voice was very hoarse, weak and unimpressive.
Today-Oh my God. I can not even begin to explain how breathtaking, perfect, full voiced, so commited Bernadette was this afternoon. I have never seen anything like it in my life. She wasn't hoarse AT all and hit every note with a full belting voice that shook the rafters. It was so much of a different show than when I last saw it. And when she hits the note "but not Rose!" in the reprise with the traveling car picking up the boys, it was just jaw dropping. When I first saw it, she didn't have a fierce dominating prescence, her whole objective was to get through the show. Now, she took every moment to its fullest and had the audience in her palm the whole way through. Before, Everything's Coming up Roses was embarrasing to watch, to imagine how she could just croak her way through it, this time is was so gorgous, so scary, I just can't put it into words. And she held every note as written. Now, Tammy Blanchard. I hate to say this.... She was perfect in every way until the dressing room scene at the end, it was af she had a bet with someone on how fast she could say these lines. These are her most important lines and she went through them 100 miles per hour with no thought or anything...June's understudy was in and just as good as Kate Reinders. Herbie, just delightful once again, and delightful at the stage door.
AND NOW---ROSE'S TURN:
After today's performance, there is no doubt in my mind that this role was written specifically for Bernadette. It was the most stunning and absolutely magical and everything theatre is at its highest level. She sounded better than on all over her past performance CDs, better than her concert performances, better than I have ever heard her...She was 100 times better than her Tonys performance, which I watch daily. Everyone who has seen it has complained about her hoarse voice, and she was just the best thing in the world. Marissa Jaret Winokur, that Tony you have is NOT YOURS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And when she got into "Everything's Coming up Rose! Everything's Coming up Roses!" She belted it like there was no tommorow, using the whole stage as the marquees lite behind her. After Rose's Turn she received an immediate full 4 minute standing ovation with people screaming and shouting at her "YOU'RE THE BEST!!" It was nothing like I've ever seen. She just kept doing her bows during this until Louise interupted. I can not tell how much her performance has changed since April 19th. From sick, unsure, and cutsey, to fierce, powerful, perfect comic timing and in doubt in anyone's mind that SHE is Madame Rose, and no other can play this role like she can. I was just so dissapointed that I couldn't go backstage. My mom's close friend is an aquitance of Bernadette's and was at a bridal shower last week that she was at and just didn't feel comfortable asking of she could put me on the backstage pass list. Even Bernadette's friends are in awe of her and Bernadette wishes to keep her professional life seperate from her personal life, so its understandable that a request to meet her was not fulfilled-but yet so disapointing. And she doesn't come out after matinees. I was heartbroken. They say she comes out every night at 11:30--if only I lived in NYC!
They are now selling souvenir books with great photos in it that I got signed by Tammy and John. Tammy really was wondeful in all her strip routines, but such a shame the way she threw away the end.
The most thrilling experience anyone could wish to have!
Bernadette is the reason for musical theatre.

Thanks a lot, Chip. Here I am trying to be patient, waiting for August 30th when I see the show again and YOU have to come up with this AWESOME review and now I'm not feeling very patient anymore!!! :-) LOL

Seriously, thanks for the great review. It's gotten me even more pumped up to see the show again. I saw it in previews and, although it was pretty good, it was unfortunately on the day when BP was coming down with her cold. I'm really looking forward to seeing her again and thanks for your great review.

Yikes. I was just coming down from the high of seeing 'Gypsy' Saturday and Monday, and now you've got me all hyped again.

I enjoyed similar feelings from Monday night's magnificent performance. Totally awestruck by "Everything's Coming..." and "Rose's Turn." Literally, jumped out my chair at the end. I saw the show in mid-June, mid-July and again on the weekend, and instead of getting tired and stale as the run goes on, she gets better and better and better.
Again I contend, this performance **must be** filmed for posterity. Hers is the definitive Rose, or it certainly will be before she's done.

Does anyone know if she can be nominated again next year for a Tony? They can correct a grievous error.

August 19. August 19. August 19.

LOL! You have no idea how much wish that were possible! I was just thinking yesterday about how it is too bad that the show didn't have more time to find its groove before this year's Tony awards. Not only would Bernadette have easily won, but I also think the show would have won for best revival considering the changes that have been made since May--in just a few months, it has gone from good to amazing!!

Thanks for your post Chip1012! I got chills reading it! It totally brought back the excitement of the show and the incredible emotional energy of Bernadette's powerful performance. Wow! Can't wait to see it again!

Ah, well. Hoping against hope, I guess. Thought if the run runs into next year, it could count.

Perhaps she'll take it to London after Broadway, and she'll win an Olivier.

Shows are only eligible for Tonys the year that they open on Broadway. Unfortunately Bernadette's moment has passed.

Is it pathetic that I got choked up while reading your review, Chip012? :-) That was an UNBELIEVABLE recollection!

I guess it's a bit disappointing to read because I was supposed to be in New York yesterday, and supposed to be seeing Gypsy tonight. I live in Michigan and my dear friend and I were going to fly into New York for about 4 days, do some sight seeing, and of course, see Gypsy. We found a very affordable package online last week and were about to purchase it when we noticed the last disclaimer at the bottom of the agreement: "A reminder that you must be at least 21 years of age to check into your hotel." Needless to say, I was devastated. The entire summer has been building to this amazing trip to New York and then to find out that 2 people who are BOTH 19 years old, own cars, pay insurance, are going to college, and are legally ADULTS can't check into a hotel.

I'll have to find some way to make it to New York soon. How I will get there, though, I'm not sure.

Question about a backdrop- during "Everything's Coming up Roses" and the beginning of Act 2 there was a backdrop of a sky with clouds with a black stripe on the bottom. Does anyone know what the purpose of this backdrop is? It didn't make any dramatic sense...
