And it seems to be the ones who were really, really old that are all dying at once. What gives!?

From: northern VA | posted: 7/28/2003 at 4:49:14 PM ET Apparently, this was not unexpected. The family asked him where he would like to be buried, and he said,"Surprise me." And that was a few days ago-even though he was sick,he still had the clarity of mind to make a quip. And a priest was there with him and his family when he died.
I know some may not think this way,but there is such a thing as a good death. When a person has had a good life and is able to say their goodbyes, moments during the dying can be a great comfort later on in life. That is a blessing in itself. He had his family and the family priest for comfort (he and his wife were devout Catholics),and they got to say goodbye.
Of course, despite that, and despite the fact that he lived to be 100,without severe dementia,it still must be very sad and painful for the family. Especially his wife,to whom he was married for 70 years.

From: New York City | posted: 7/28/2003 at 4:59:48 PM ET The world has lost one of the greats. It is quite sad indeed. And you're right, Christine -- they're dying right and left this summer. I imagine the Oscars tribute this coming year will be quite extensive.
