From: Boston | posted: 7/27/2003 at 11:49:56 AM ET I have the Merman, Lansbury, and Midler Gypsy cast albums and can't wait for Bernadette's to arrive. Does anyone have the one with Tyne Daly? Is it worth adding to my collection? I have heard her do Rose's Turn and while her voice isn't as up to par as the others, she does act the part quite well. Please post your thoughts on this recording.
Thanks

From: northern VA | posted: 7/27/2003 at 12:17:08 PM ET Tyne Daly was sick when she recorded Gypsy (they couldn't reschedule). If you go to a Barnes and Noble music section, you can listen to part of the recording and decide for yourself.

Registered: 6/29/2003 | posted: 7/27/2003 at 4:39:47 PM ET I think I might offend the Gods of Gypsy by my statement, but I think the Tyne Daly recording is the most similar one to that of La Merman. The have the same brassy *whaaaaiiinnnn* sound, though the tempos are picked up for Daly.
Angela Lansbury is more sophisticated it seems...
I like all recordings really. I think it is nice to hear different interpretations of the same material though I am sure the honesty and humanity of Peters is what I prefer.
Stranger here myself...

She was wonderful...and the earlier posters are right...she was ill when they recorded the CD. She was far superior in the theatre. I thought she was the best Rose until Bernadette came along and made the role her own. The album of Tyne really does not do her justice.
Counting the days until the Bernadette CD is released!

Registered: 6/9/2003 | posted: 7/28/2003 at 12:01:16 AM ET One additional thought. I think the overture sounds best on the Tyne Daly album than any other to date. They were in the age of digital recording and it really sounds like you are in the theatre.
Although, I am sure that the new album (with the wonderful Marvin Laird conducting) will be the best ever.

From: northern VA | posted: 7/28/2003 at 9:12:05 AM ET I do love Tyne Daly. She is marvelous. I have the recording, and did not know she was sick until I read it somewhere.
The new recording sounds like it will be the most complete of the recordings.
