Registered: 5/3/2002 | posted: 7/23/2003 at 1:23:48 PM ET I love that film; it's one of my favorite films of all time. In my opinion it's one of two undisputed masterpieces that Bernadette has been in, the other one being Sunday in the Park with George. I've tried writing my thoughts on these before when the subjects have come up but I always end up sounding like a pretentious, pompous idiot so I never post them. This may sound condescending (I don't mean it to) but I really think you need to be an adult who has experienced certain kinds of frustrations and disappointments before you can really respond fully to what they're about. It's almost impossible for me to imagine someone in high school or college being able to appreciate them emotionally. There are certain works of art that only work for you when you're at the right time of your life for them. I've had that experience many times, and I continue to, which is why I never write anything off but keep going back and giving things another chance (I'm speaking of art , not commercial junk). Wait ten years and I have a feeling that Pennies from Heaven will speak to you very differently.

However, someone can still be young and appreciate (and understand) this movie...OR someone could be an adult with certain experiences (like you stated) and not like this movie. And not because they don't understand what was being said in this movie but simply because its not to their liking. Art, whether it be a painting or a movie such as this,is objective. I personally like this movie. Its not one of my faves but its good.

This movie is a little odd, probably not one of my favorites, but I like it for its originality, and I think she is wonderful in it.

| posted: 7/23/2003 at 10:07:32 PM ET It still isn't one of my favorites, but it is a different and interesting movie.
I love when movies are shown on TCM because I love hearing Robert Osbournes' commentary before and after them. I had no idea that this particular movie was based on a television show. I missed some of the commentary though because my television did some kind of sporatick (sp?)sound testing right in the middle of his speaking, so I probably missed some other interesting facts.
It's funny, but I hadn't watched the movie in over a year (possibly in 2 years) and I found that I did appreciate it more this time. I like the moral (perhaps not the actual moral of the story, but this is what I got from it) that life is not like movies or songs. Everything is not always going to turn out ok in the end, and we do have to pay for our mistakes (and sometimes the mistakes of others); and that even the slightest decision we make can alter our entire lifestyle.
By the way, another one of my favorite parts of this movie (besides the one I mentioned in the old discusion) is when Steve and Bernadette are up in front of the movie screen and dancing exactly as Fred and Ginger are.

| posted: 7/24/2003 at 12:15:25 AM ET I believe that movie might be "Top Hat" from 1935. What I find amusing is that, if I am not mistaking, Pennies From Heaven takes place in the late 1920's/early 1930's. If that's the case, then Top Hat would not have been around yet? Unless the movie is "Flying Down To Rio" from 1933...but I really think it's "Top Hat." That would make it impossible for them to be in a theater watching that movie at that time!
Then again, Pennies From Heaven might actually be taking place in 1935?

The same thing is done in Annie when they go to see Camille with Greta Garbo which didn't come out until 1937. That sort of thing happens all the time in movies and books.
