In a Broadway Theatre, yes I think it's innapropriate. I've seen people do it in regular movie theaters, and it doesn't bother me; but it seems that no one has respect for live theatre anymore.
There's NO reason to put your legs/feet up on the chair in front of you. If your legs are cramped and need to be stretched, get up and stand or walk around.

mrbig I can totally relate. We went to see "The Producers" in Boston on Sunday and the woman sitting next to me basically BINGED on those little hard candies in the crackly plastic all through the second act! However, on a scale of 1 to 10 on the annoyance scale, you win with the loud, clueless mom and kids.

i agree, people can be VERY annoying in theatres..... it totally ruins the experience!!!!!!!!!!! especially when one pays a large amount of money for a great experience & it is ruined by others.

but when we went to go see Gypsy, about halfway through the second act, a man sitting behind my father roughly placed his hand on his shoulder & growled (he was practically shaking with anger!), "i couldn't see a thing the whole night! quit sitting like that!" my dad was leaning forward a bit to see better! he had no idea the man could not see! my dad tried to move over a bit so the man could see & i think things were ok after that.

also, though, i'm a kid (13, so a teen but still) & i enjoy live theatre soooooo much! my parents have taken me to see all sorts of live theatre from high school performances to community theatre...... all the way up to broadway (this year) since i was little. & we (my sister and i) have always acted well, so not all kids in theatres are bad-behaving. in fact, when my sister was 3, she sat through a whole performance of the Wizard of Oz without hardly moving!

one last thing (sorry this is kinda long)- is it annoying anyone else that live theatre is being disrespected by clothes? i mean, i saw people coming into the theatres with basically jeans and a t-shirt on! i mean, for the most part there was nice apparel, but sometimes.....

anyway, i'm sad to be back from NYC i envy you new yorkers sooooooooooo much!!!!!!!

I so wish I was Bernadette's daughter! Sorry, wishful thinking again...... but we do have the SAME BIRTHDAY!!!! February 28 is the bestest day ever!!!! by the way, BROADWAY ROX!!!!!!

Thank you I'm so glad that a 13 years old, you are respectfull and dress nicely to go to the theatre. I despise anyone who wears sneakers, shorts, t-shirts to a live show. It shows that those people are of very low class in my opinon.
Sorry, I know we had this discussion once before, so I won't go on, but yes...I too am annoyed at how a lot of people dress for the theatre.

I also find that a lot of children are better behaved than most adults...especially when the show is age appropriate for them. I sat behind a little girl the other day at Thoroughly Modern Millie, and she was so good the entire time. I think children just become captivated by the production. I remember seeing The Lion King with my neighbor's, and I was so afraid that their youngest child would not behave, and I kept looking over at her and she would not take her eyes off the stage.

I agree that the way people act during performances these days are so obnoxious sometimes! I can't stand it when people think they have to sing really loudly to all the songs and I REALLY hate it when people whisper extremely loudly to the people they are with over and over again. I also really hate the clothes thing! I know this shouldn't bother me, especially being only 17, but it just drives me up the wall when I see people dressed as if they are going to some sporting event or to see a movie!

When I went to see Gypsy, I wore a dress because personally I think dressing up and getting excited and ready is part of the fun of the whole theater experience. Not to mention, it is really not appropriate to wear jeans and t-shirts to a Broadway performance. I think it's a little disrespectful to the actors. I mean, they spend a ton of time getting ready and looking nice for the audience; why shouldn't the audience do their part and at least look decent?

I'm sorry I'm ranting here, but now I'm on a role LOL. There was a couple near me who brought their daughter with them who was about three (have they heard of a babysitter? I mean this is Gypsy, not The Lion King!) and they brought coloring books and crayons for her, which, okay...keep her occupied, I understand. But I think the fact that they brought what looked like their entire snack shelf was going a little overboard! This girl was spilling Goldfish and Cheerios all over the place, and when her sippy cup (those cups for young kids with a plastic top that prevents spills) rolled below a person's chair in front of her, they actually had to shift position and feel around for this cup in complete darkness because the little girl was whispering rather loudly, "MOMMY MY CUP DROPPPPPPED!!!" Now, I have absolutely no problems with little kids and their mistakes, but come on, I think the parents really needed to use some common sense if they knew their daughter was so antsy!

One more thing. Before the show started, a woman in front of me was SO EXCITED about being at the show and when the Overture began, she began dancing a little in her chair and mouthing the words. Now, I think this is okay. It kind of made me more excited. She stopped once the actual show started.

LOL A lot of the people seem to do that during the overture, and I'm oky with that. It's fun. But it's really annoying when they do it throughout the entire performance.

One of my worst experiences was this man in the row behind me during a performance of THE PRODUCERS.... Anyways.... He kept singing ALL of the songs VERY loudly! I heard a lady ask him to stop and he became so mad that he like started belting the songs... There were two empty seats 4 rows in front of where I was so my friend and I moved to them... Later on, however, I did see one of the ushers talk to him.... Some people...

I really do wonder what the actors on stage are thinking when they can hear people in the audience singing so loudly or making a ton of noise! They must think they are nuts! I've been in a lot of plays where I can here babies crying and people sneezing or coughing, even when the orchestra is in full blast! Some people are just so LOUD.

i agree. i mean, coloring books and snacks at Gypsy?? that show is not for little kids anyways (well, i guess it depends on their maturity, but 3 years old?). but yeah, i like to see other people getting excited about the show too. b/c obviously i get totally excited beyond belief, & it's nice to know someone else feels the same way.

Thoroughly Modern Millie was gr8 wasn't it? of course Gypsy was still my fave but millie was a good second!
