As always, Bernadette was fantastic and her applause after Rose's Turn must have gone on for about 2-3 minutes. She was amazing.
Kate, Julie, and Heather were exceptional last night.
The lamb stole the scene last night. During "Little Lamb" the little lamb kept whacking its ears back and forth and opening its mouth. It had everyone hysterical. At one point Tammy even cracked a smile.

From Internet Network: 66.134.207.x | posted: 5/28/2003 at 4:49:19 PM ET I just read someone's Gypsy writeup on Sondheim.com. They said Bernadette was performing but sounded sick. I thought someone here just went this week too, but I can't find the post. How did she sound?

I think what people are forgetting is that eventhough she got a few days off its hard as a singer to go right back into performing such a demanding role like that. When Bernadette is in a show she usually takes voice lessons once a day as well or at the very least has a pretty long daily routine of warm ups and exercises. So having those few days off...and probably being on vocal rest meant her vocal chords needed time to be warmed up again. I know that for me, if I don't sing for a while my vocal chords become tight and it takes a while to get them back into shape. Its even harder when you are still sick! And I really don't think she got she time off she needed to recover. I'm sort of getting tired of the people on ATC assuming that the problem is that this role is too demaning on her vocally and that her voice is too "fragile" and that's why she's been sounding hoarse during a few performances. I can tell you right now that she most definitely is sick and being sick can cause stress on your vocal chords, obviously. I'm not saying that this role isn't vocally challenging because it most certainly is and yes I'm sure doing a role such as this can cause some vocal problems or damage too,but its definitely very difficult to perform this role 7 or 8 times a week when you've been sick for nearly a month! She knows how to preserve her voice and sing correctly so she doesn't strain or damage it...sick or not. I know she has studied with Seth Riggs in the past who specializes in this sort of thing.

From: Brooklyn | posted: 5/28/2003 at 5:27:12 PM ET On Saturday night there were moments when you knew that Bernadette was still not 100%. The amazing thing was that Bernadette used the hoarseness in her voice for the character so it was barley noticeable. Unless you are like us fans who listen to her sing all the time.
On Saturday she was Fantastic. I thought the applause after roses turn was never going to end. She must have bowed 8 times.

| posted: 5/28/2003 at 6:03:43 PM ET I saw it Monday and her voice is suffering quite a bit. She wiped her nose a few times and coughed several times (quite congested coughs) so she is obviously suffering from something. During Coming up Roses, her voice just got worse and worse. I mean, it became more and more hoarse but she couldn't stop. Toward the end of that song, she can barely take a breath, let alone wet her throat again, so she just kept singing. But the hoarseness worked. She just wasn't able to hold out the last note which was the only part that I thought was a problem. She must have been drinking a lot of hot tea and using other remedies during the intermission because she came back in the second act and sounded fine. But by Rose's Turn, her voice was going again and she ended up having to speak sing quite a bit of the song. But she pulled out all the stops dramatically and the song was still thrilling. It is much better when she can actually sing it but it was still very enjoyable. I do feel really bad for her that she can't take a break to fully recover her vocal abilities. Maybe after the Tony's she can regularly take a few performances off just to ease the strain, if only as a temporary thing.

I know I'm not the only one who feels this way.

From Internet Network: 24.239.138.x | posted: 6/3/2003 at 9:22:35 PM ET Well, Christine, I'm sure people who say that to her are trying to be nice...and if they've just paid to see one of her performances and she was obviously sick, I think it's pretty generous of them to be concerned about her health and not storming the box office for a refund. Not that being sick makes her bad...perfromers with much weaker voices have played the part successfully...the role doesn't REQUIRE great singing necessarily. Still, we'll all be glad when she's back in tiptop shape.

Registered: 3/10/2001 | posted: 6/3/2003 at 9:28:00 PM ET I can understand what Christine is saying...I have heard people, strangers, flat out say to her " Go home and get some rest"...THAT, in my opinion is down right rude. Just like any other profession, people really have no right to tell her what to do. Concern is fine but being so rude, in my opinion, is not.

| posted: 6/3/2003 at 9:36:17 PM ET Unless they are telling her to go home and get some rest before or during her performance, I wouldn't call that being rude. I'm assuming they are saying this at the stage door at the end of the evening. That is a common thing to say to someone who is sick to show concern. Of course the tone is important which can be hard to read but just saying that would mean showing concern to me.

Registered: 3/10/2001 | posted: 6/3/2003 at 9:41:29 PM ET It was said in a bossy " I know whats best for you" type of tone. I'm thinking that if this person was truely concerned about her getting her rest they wouldn't have bothered to stay at the stage door, hence taking up more of her time( when she could be resting) just to tell her that she needs to go home and get some rest....

I can definately see how people are trying to express their concern but if I was her and everyone was reminding me that I was sick it would just make me feel worse and add to the pressure of trying to get better without fully recovering. Don't know if that makes sense..
