From Internet Network: 64.12.96.x | posted: 5/21/2003 at 12:20:01 AM ET In case people didn't see this in Liz Smith's May 18th column: "Joyce Wadler of the New York Times and Michael Riedel of the New York Post, and how these two are making their marks by making waves. This reminded us that once a Sammy Glick-type hustler asked Walter Winchell how to become famous. Winchell said, "Go out and attack somebody or something big." The next day, the hustler attacked Winchell and soon became a Hollywood producer . . . Someone else told us that Shubert biggie Gerald Schoenfeld was reassuring his ailing star, Bernadette Peters, that she should take Mr. Riedel's serial critiques in stride. Bernadette shrugged and said, "He's just doing his job."
I just noticed that if you click on the photo link for 5/7 at the bottom of the gossip page, there are more photos of the Gypsy opening night and there are also links to pictures from last year's Tonys.

One of the greats. And her attitude, combined with her talent, is why MILLIONS of dollars are pouring into the GYPSY Box Office.

Whether she feels differently in private (which would be very understanble) she is too classy to say anything more. I'm sure she knows if she said more it would just fuel Reidel but she always takes the high road in everything she does.

From Internet Network: 4.35.92.x | posted: 5/21/2003 at 2:15:10 PM ET Hi there- I've been reading for a while and posting occasionally, but I thought I'd jump in on this one because I actually wrote a letter to the editor to The Post about Riedel after his Tony Baloney and Sour Note (among other) columns. They haven't printed it and probably won't, but I thought I'd post it here in case you might like to read it. Not the best thing I've ever written, but hopefully it'll entertain you:
The Riedel Weasel
I would like to profess my profound disgust with your (ahem) "reporter" Michael Riedel, whose recent bloodlust for Gypsy and Bernadette Peters in particular has been simply too obnoxious to believe. And while I am able to simply ignore his comments, dismissing them as quickly as I dismiss him, I would like to express my opinion as freely as he has expressed his. He is an idiot.
Wrong from the very start about the success of Gypsy and Bernadette, I can only now imagine he is trying to redeem himself in some way by bringing her down. Which, Mr. Riedel, we all learned in fourth grade is what those with no self-esteem do to make themselves feel better. How very sad. I would suggest journaling--privately, of course, as we've all had just about enough of your hatred--journaling. Or therapy.
Bernadette is a breathtaking Momma Rose, but more than that she is a warm and caring person, and it is bitterness that spoils the milk, Mr. Riedel. Not a lil' ole' respiratory infection.

| posted: 5/21/2003 at 2:21:47 PM ET Well, besides class, she is also very intelligent. She could probably write a nice long response to everything that moron has said about her and make him feel 2 inches tall, but like Moljul said, it would just add fuel to his fire...and Bernadette knows that. She's smarter than he is, and (most likely) doesn't let his insignificant remarks get to her.
She has talent, friends, family, fans, and most importantly a loving personality. He has a computer and a tabloid that poses as a newspaper. That will only take him so far.
